Ryan Hall (5-1, 1-0 UFC) recently was crowned TUF 22 champion by defeating Artem Lobov at the season finale.
Diaz (19-10, 14-8 UFC) is coming off a huge submission victory over the UFC's defacto golden boy Conor McGregor. The two will fight again at UFC 202 on August 20th.

Fights to Make After UFC 135 and UFN 25
UFC 135 and UFN 25 were two solid events that shook up the landscape of the UFC. Most notable was another excellent performance by Jon Jones at UFC 135 and Jake Ellenberger's nasty KO of Jake Shields at UFN 25.
Here is a mock look-in at some potential bouts down the line:
Jon Jones against Rashad Evans- Jones is coming off a dominant performance against Rampage Jackson, utilizing his range, landing low kicks at will, and ending the fight with a 4th round rear naked choke. Rashad has been chomping at the bit for a title shot, last fighting Tito Ortiz at UFC 133 and winning via TKO.
Jake Ellenberger against winner of Condit v. GSP- Ellenberger has been on fire since his insanely close loss to Carlos Condit, winning 5 straight fights. His last was the pinnacle with a destructive KO against title challenger Jake Shields.
Josh Koscheck against Tim Boetsch- Koscheck was able to stop Matt Hughes via TKO at UFC 135 as time was expiring. With hints at moving to 185, and the UFC not eager to see GSP v. Koscheck III, it is time for him to make the jump. Boetsch notched another big time peformance at UFC 135, crushing Nick Ring, before that he stopped Kendall Grove.
Travis Browne against the winner of Kongo v. Mitrione- Browne now stands at 12-0-1, taking a unanimous decision against Rob Broughton at UFC 135. With the draw coming against Cheick Kongo, a rematch would make sense should he win against Mitrione. Mitrione has confused many with his striking and athletic ability. Mitrione v. Kongo happens at UFC 137.
Nate Diaz against the winner of Mac Danzig v. Matt Wiman- Diaz is coming off a pinpoint performance against Takanori Gomi. Looking to make another run at 155, after alternating wins and losses at 170, the next logical step would be a fight against the winner of these two TUF vets.
Erik Koch against loser of Jose Aldo v. Kenny Florian- Koch was dominant in his decision win against TUF winner Jonathan Brookins extending his win streak to 4, defending takedowns and punishing his opponent. With Chad Mendes owning the title shot, Koch needs a high profile bout to push him into conention at 145.

Proposed Punishments Excesive Following Strikeforce: Nashville Brawl

The Tennessee Athletic Commission is still investigating the post fight brawl that occurred on April 17, 2010 after the Strikeforce main event in Nashville, Tennessee. Following current Jake Shields’ defense of his belt, which saw him pull off an upset against former Pride champ Dan Henderson, fighter Jason "Mayhem" Miller broke up the post-fight interview, getting on the microphone and asking for a rematch.
What ensued next was Shields pushing Miller, then Shields training partners Gilbert Melendez, Nick Diaz and Nate Diaz jumping into the fray, throwing wild kicks and punches. By the time the action stopped, it looked like every staff member from Strikeforce was breaking the brawl up. As per usual, announcer Gus Johnson was yapping like a crazy person to the television audience.
The rumored punishments for the brawl participants stands at a nine month suspension with a $20,000 fine ranging to a three month suspension with a $5,000 fine. These punishments are overly excessive. Fighters Jason "Mayhem" Miller, Jake Shields, Gilbert Melendez and Nick and Nate Diaz were caught in the heat of the moment and regret their actions. But what damage was actually done? Everyone was healthy afterward and apologized for what occurred.
Mayhem Miller acted inappropriately for interrupting the champion mid sentence after he had just started his post fight interview. Obviously, the Cesar Gracie trained Shields, Melendez and Diaz brothers reaction was over the top. But, Miller should have known that type of reaction would follow if he got in the cage at that time. Likewise, Strikeforce employees should not have allowed Miller into the cage.
While I would agree with a thirty day suspension and $5,000 fine, hampering the fighters ability to earn a living for potentially nine months is overly excessive. I have seen worst displays in boxing weigh-ins and press conferences. Look up the Hopkins vs. Wright, Khan vs. Malignaggi or Mayorga vs. Vargas brawls on youtube.com for examples.
Recently, Paul Daley sucker punched Josh Koscheck following the bell at UFC 113. While Daley was released from the UFC following the incident, the athletic commission has not issued a fine or suspension.
Why draw further attention to a minor black eye in MMA history? The casual fan and mainstream media have completely forgotten about the incident. The Tennessee Athletic Commission should give the participants of the brawl a reduced punishment and move on.

Strikeforce Brawl Fallout
Here is video of the brawl which erupted at the conclusion of Strikeforce's second foray on CBS. The post-fight melee is not close to as bad as events that have happened in Brazian MMA in the past, most notably the riot during the Renzo Gracie fight against Eugenio Tadeu in September of 1997.
You could blame the melee on Mayhem Miller interrupting Jake Shields post fight speech, Melendez pushing Miller, or the Diaz brothers going crazy. Mayhem was the instigator however, and should have known the reaction that would follow. So far Scott Coker, president of Strikeforce, has stated he did not know Mayhem Miller was going into the cage.
The Strikeforce: Nashville ratings have been reported to be horrendous, losing to NBC, ABC and Fox. The brawl is being talked about much more than the three championship fights. While the three championship fights were technically sound, but they were not entertaining, highlight reel fights CBS was hoping for. The brawl is now the only thing that people are talking about.
When a brawl is the main source of publicity, that is a very bad sign. The CBS deal could be in severe jeopardy, which could impact one of the main revenue streams of the promotion. Strikeforce could get a boost in publicity, but this is the worst way to get it. The history of Strikeforce will be marred forever by this incident, we will wait to see where they go.

Ultimate Fight Night 20 Results
Ultimate Fight Night 20 might not have delivered in fireworks, but was filled with three entertaining fights. The sold out George Mason crowd was boisterous and loud throughout the night wanting action.
One fighter who delivered was TUF 7 contestant Gerald Harris, who succesfully returned to the UFC with a TKO of previously undefeated John Salter. The 185 pound Harris won the UFC's knockout of the night bonus and is currently riding an 8 fight win streak.
Here are the results:
Gray Maynard def. Nate Diaz via split dec- unfortunately, the main event proved to be the biggest snoozer of them all. Maynard threw many powerful, looping punches throughout the fight, but most didn't land. Diaz couldn't get his short punches through and failed to get the fight to the ground. In the end, Maynard was able to defend Diaz' attacks and land occasional punches to get the win.
It seems that Frank Edgar will face BJ Penn next for the lightweight title in Abu Dhabi. Maynard will likely have to notch another win to get a shot at the title. Maybe a fight with Kenny Florian is in the works.
Evan Dunham def. Efrain Escudero via sub (armbar) R3, 1:59- Escudero dominated in the first round rocking Dunham with punches and getting takedowns with quick groud and pound strikes. It seemed Efrain almost had the ability to close out the fight.
In the third round and pivotal round, Dunham got a takedown and when Efrain tried to roll to escape he got himself in deep trouble. Dunham had Efrain's arm trapped, rolling to a triangle before an armbar. Efrain didn't tap for several seconds making the viewing audience squeemish as Dunham wrench the arm and elbow, eventually coaxing a tapout.
*Dunham wins Submission of the Night.
Aaron Simpson def. Tom Lawlor via split dec- The first round belonged to Tom Lawlor, whose Hulk Hogan like entrance was a breath of fresh air. He landed short left hooks, straights and jabs to dizzy and daze Aaron Simpson.
In the second and third, Simpson may have done more to win. In the third, Simpson was able to out grapple Lawlor, getting his back. However, he didn't inflict much punishment on the fellow wrestler. Scorecards split for Simpson, but I scored it a draw.
*Simpson and Lawlor both win Fight of the Night bouns.
Amir Sadollah def. Brad Blackburn via unanimous dec- Amir peppered Blackburn with a variety of attacks throughout this fight. Blackburn, fresh from shoulder surgery could offer little in response. Amir beat up Blackburn with a big flying knee, front kicks, and a decent ground and pound attack.

UFN 19 - Oklahoma City
Oklahoma City was ready and rocking for the return of the UFC for the first time since the epic UFC 4 tournament rolled into town in December of 1994. That tournament had an epic finish with Royce Gracie narrowly defeating Dan Severn after taking a beating for 15 minutes. This Ultimate Fight night featured three epic fights before the main event.
Nate Diaz def Melvin Guillard via sub (guillotine) R2, 2:13- In the main event, Nate Diaz was able to get back on track with a submission victory over the uber athletic Melvin Guillard. In the first round, Guillard went on the offensive, tagging Diaz in the eye knocking him to the canvas. When he got up, blood streamed from Diaz' eye.
However, in the second round, Guillard got a little too comfortable and found himself stuck in a modified guillotine. Soon after Guillard was tapping.
*Diaz wins Submission of the Night.
Gray Maynard def Roger Huerta via split dec- Huerta looked to utilize his advantage in kickboxing to keep Maynard at bay from long distance. Maynard consistently tried to close the distance and tag Huerta with a big punch.
In the third round, Maynard finally got the fight to the mat and locked in a kimura. It seemed as if Huerta's shoulder was going to be ripped off, but somehow he managed to roll out of it. Huerta's heart will never be questioned. I scored the fight 29-28 Maynard, the judges scored it 30-27 twice for Maynard, once 29-28 Huerta.
Carlos Condit def Jake Ellenberger via split dec- Ellenberger didn't get the memo that he was supposed to be a big time underdog. In the first round he worked over Condit with big punches, causing Condit to go into the fetal position on numerous occasions. The ref did a good job letting the action go.
In the second and third rounds, Condit seemed to get better positions on the ground, get mount, and almost get submissions. But, Ellenberger always seemed to escape. I scored the fight a 28-28 draw, while the judges scored it 29-28 twice for Condit, once 29-28 Ellenberger.
Nate Quarry def Tim Credeur via unanimous dec- This fight was an all-out battle and definitely a contender for fight of the year. In the first round, Credeur looked to be landing more effective combinations, kicks and jabs. Near the end of the round, Credeur send Quarry to the canvas and followed him to the ground, nearly getting a fight ending rear naked choke.
In the second and third, Quarry was able to land big right hands, knocking Credeur to the canvas. From there, Quarry unleashed some good ground and pound, with Creduer countering with submission attempts and striking from his back. The crowd was screaming throughout, as both fighters threw punches back and forth.

UFN 19 - Diaz v. Guillard Preview
UFN 19 will come to us live on Spike TV right before the debut of TUF 10 - Heavyweights. The event will take place in the Cox Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The main event will pit TUF 5 Champ Nate Diaz against TUF 2's Melvin Guillard.
Nate Diaz (10-4) is known for his dynamic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills and ever improving boxing. He is coming off two disappointing and kind of lazy decision losses to Clay Guida and Joe Stevenson. Prior to that, Diaz had unleashed five straight wins which included 4 submissions and a decision over Josh Neer.

Melvin Guillard (22-7) has shown flashes of being an extremely talented athlete in KO victories over Denis Silver, Gabe Ruediger and Rick Davis. However, he is also prone to trash talking and coming out on the wrong end of a submission. Guillard will try to sprawl and brawl his way to his third straight victory.

UFC 94 Preview
UFC 94 kicks off this Saturday, January 31st at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The BJ Penn v. GSP fight is being hyped up as the Superbowl of MMA. We will see how the card plays out, hopefully Machida is feeling peppy. All fighters made weight, with former heavyweights Christian Wellish and Jake O'Brien debuting at 205 pounds.
MAIN CARD
Georges St. Pierre vs. B.J. Penn- This fight is being hyped as the fight of the year. The undisputed king of the 170 pound class versus the king of the 155 pound class. In addition, this is a rematch of a match from UFC 58 where BJ lost a close split decision. I would expect to see GSP go for the takedown early and often. The question in this fight may come down to whether or not BJ can get a submission off his back.
Since a crazy upset loss to Matt Serra, Georges St. Pierre has been on quite a streak. He has outwrestled Josh Koscheck, armbarred Matt Hughes and punished Matt Serra and Jon Fitch since that loss. Georges is an incredible athlete, with suberb striking, cardio and wrestling ability. Georges also holds wins over Jay Hieron, Sean Sherk, Mayhem Miller and Frank Trigg.

Ultimate Fight Night 15 Results

Ultimate Fight Night 15 featured four televised fights that were each entertaining. While I would have seen Sakara's head kick KO or Massenzio and Miller's submissions that all ended in a minute thirty in the first round, it was a good show overall.
Eric Schafer def. Houston Alexander via Sub (Arm-triangle choke) - R1, 4:53- Houston Alexander showed again that while he has power, he is not good off his back. Alexander unleashed some wicked knees almost knocking out Schafer. However, Schafer held tight, was able to eventually get the takedown and mount. From mount, Houston was toast, though he almost got to the bell. Schafer's tight arm triangle won him the match.
Alan Belcher def. Ed Herman via Decision (Split)- I actually scored this contest in favor of Ed Herman, but it was very close. Belcher landed the more effective strikes, but Herman stood his ground and only once on a punch that pushed him to the cage wall did he appear stunned. The third round was the only true convincing round that should have went to Herman as he had Belcher mounted and was throwing heavy strikes. The first I gave to Herman because of the near submissions while using the darce choke, with the takedowns and ground game. But, that it is a fight and you don't want to leave it to the judges.
Clay Guida def. Mac Danzig via Decision (Unanimous)- Clay worked a perfect game plan outworking Danzig standing and getting takedowns at will. Danzig never really got his submission game working while off his back. At one point Danzig looked for a omaplata with his leg high, but he wasn't able to capitalize. Guida never stopped and peppered Danzig with strikes the whole match. I like many fans would have liked to see Guida go for more of the knockout blow, but to Guida's credit he never stopped going at full throttle for three rounds.
Nathan Diaz def. Josh Neer via Decision (Split)- Diaz and Neer fought a close battle that went back and forth. Neer may have said in the pre-fight that he would be trying to test Diaz' hands may have been lying a touch. Diaz won the takedown battle, capped by a beautiful judo throw. Diaz probably had a slight edge on strikes as well.
Neer was able to get near armbars and triangles, but Diaz utilized a step over escaped that seemed to work every time. A few times Neer was throwing some nasty upkicks off his back that almost landed. A very good fight, and well deserving of the fight of the night bonus that both fighters received.
Quote of the night from Nate Diaz following the fight, “Josh Neer, he ain’t no black belt in jiu-jitsu like the other guys I’ve been fighting. This motherf*****, this dude right here can fight.” Nate also went on to give props to Jake Shields, Gilbert Melendez, Cesar Gracie and his brother. He said that another league won't give Nick a fight, referring to Elite XC and champ KJ Noons.

Ultimate Fight Night 15
UFC's Ultimate Fight Night 15 will be airing live on Spike TV this Wednesday night at 7 Central. All fighters have made weight and are ready to go. The Ultimate Fighter 8 reality show will debut immediately following the broadcast.
Main Card
Nate Diaz vs. Josh Neer- Nate Diaz is the champion of TUF 5, and has been on an amazing roll since the show ended. Diaz has beaten Kurt Pelligrino, Junior Assuncao, and Alvin Robinson all by way of submission since his win over Manny Gamburyan for the TUF 5 crown. Diaz will probably try to keep the fight standing for awhile as he hasn't been able to fully show off his stand-up skills in the UFC. He is phenomenal on the ground though, so don't be surprised if Diaz eventually goes for a takedown or throws guard on purpose.
Neer meanwhile has won three straight, with his last fight being a decision victory over Din Thomas at UFN 13. His biggest wins in the UFC have come over Joe Stevenson and Melvin Guillard. Outside the UFC, Josh has victories over Derrick Noble, Kyle Jensen and Forrest Petz. Neer's last submission loss was actually to Nick Diaz, Nate's brother, two years ago. I would expect Neer to keep the fight standing at all costs as Diaz holds the edge submission wise.
Mac Danzig vs. Clay Guida- Danzig was the winner of TUF 6, winning in the finale over Tommy Speer. Danzig won over Mark Bocek at UFC 83 in May, his only other official UFC fight. Ouside the UFC, Danzig had wins over Jason Ireland and Buddy Clinton.
Guida is a high energy fighter who will come in with excellent cardio and tenacity. He has wins over Samy Schiavo, Marcus Aurelio and Justin James in the UFC. Guida is a Chicago based fighter who wants to shed his image of a scrappy wrestler with good cardio. I would expect Guida to strike with Danzig, and eventually go for a slam takedown with ground and pound.
Houston Alexander vs. Eric Schafer- The is a classic grappler versus striker match-up. Alexander will look to keep the fight standing and knock out Schafer. If Schafer holds a significant advantage when it comes to the submission game. However, if Schafer comes in for a sloppy takedown attempt he may end up seeing stars.
Alexander's big wins in the UFC have come via first round KO's over Keith Jardine and Alessio Sakara. Schafer has a victory over Rob MacDonald in the UFC. Both fighters have suffered two losses in a row in the UFC. Regardless, I don't think this fight will make it out of the first round.

Herman's wins in the UFC have come over Joe Doerkson, Scott Smith and Chris Price.

Jason Brilz vs. Brad Morris- Brilz is a stud wrestler with a 15-1 mma record. He is making his debut in the UFC.
Rob Kimmons vs. Dan Miller- Dan Miller fought twice for the IFL, winning over Ryan McGivern for the IFL 185 pound title.

TUF Road For Amir
Here is a look at how Amir Sadollah's run on The Ultimate Fighter stacks up to some of the previous season's champs. Amir had to win more times than anyone else, 5, as for the first time there were 32 competitors in the tournament. Amir's first opponent, Steve Byrnes had fought in the UFC. Who fights the winner of BJ Penn v. Sean Sherk?
Roger Huerta (20-1, 6-0 UFC) and Kenny Florian (9-4, 7-2 UFC) have emerged as the frontrunners in the 155 pound division. Florian has won four straight, all finishes, after his loss to Sean Sherk. Huerta has six straight victories, four ending by early stoppage. Huerta is coming off a battle with Clay Guida in which he may have been down the first two rounds. Huerta was eventually able to get the rear naked choke for the come from behind victory.
*Close behind would have to be Tyson Griffin (11-1, 4-1 UFC) who has three straight decision victories over quality competition.
*Nate Diaz (9-2, 4-0 UFC) needs to fight Tyson Griffin, Florian or Huerta as he is ready to fight the top tier competition. All his victories have come by submission.
*5'6" Frank Edgar (8-1, 3-1 UFC) may want to move to the 145 division after being bullied by Gray Maynard. The time is right for the UFC to start a 145 division bringing over Faber, Pulver and Garcia.
*Quietly, Matt Wiman (9-3, 3-1) has 3 straight victories in the UFC at 155.
*Gray Maynard (5-0, 3-0 UFC) looked dominant in his victory over then undefeated Frank Edgar. He looks bigger than many of his opponents, but needs to finish opponents.
*Gleison Tibau's (15-5, 4-2 UFC) recent loss Tyson Griffin puts him down the ladder.

UFC Fight Night 12 Results
UFN 12 Recap
Three exciting fights made the broadcast on Wednesday night. The amount of fluff that goes into the Spike live telecasts is pretty harsh. There were 30 minutes of filler before the first fight. Then there was a long interview with Sly Stallone, and another with two guys from Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Tour. There was also the Rambo replay. Needless to say, it would have been nice if they could have put the Wiman fight that ended in the first or Corey Hill's fight that ended at the start of the second. Here are the results:
Mike Swick def. Josh Burkman via majority decision - Overall a relatively repetitive fight. Burkman tried to get a takedown, was stopped, and the fight was reset. The karate kick roundhouse by Burkman and a couple other wild and unsuccessful moves were interesting. Swick's heavy kick to Burkman's jugular probably won him a round. The other two rounds were very close. In my book this fight could have easily been a draw.
Patrick Cote def. Andrew McFedries via TKO (strikes) — R1, 1:44 - This was a very exciting 1:44 worth of action. Both fighters exchanged shots taking blows, and Cote lulled McFedries in. Cote next smashed McFedries on the jaw, following McFedries to the canvas with an uppercut. The fight was stopped with McFedries basically against the fence with his hands up taking punches.
Thiago Tavares def. Michihiro Omigawa via unanimous decision - After an entertaining grappling match in the first round, the rest of the fight was uneventful.
Nate Diaz def. Alvin Robinson via Submission (triangle choke) — R1, 3:39 - Diaz looks to be the real deal as he sealed this win with a perfectly executed triangle. After connecting with a hook, Diaz slammed Robinson to the mat, but found himself in a tight guillotine choke. Diaz stayed calm, worked himself out, and looked crisp with his grappling in the win. His legs from the bottom are never stopping as he looked extremely limber applying the triangle.
*My pick for submission of the night.
Kurt Pellegrino def. Alberto Crane via TKO (strikes) — R2, 1:55 - This fight is the type that makes some a little squeemish. Crane opened the fight with a head kick that struck Pellegrino right in the mouth. Pellegrino's bottom tooth actually punctured his skin. Crane went for a choke with Pellegrino on the floor, but the dazed Pellegrino didn't submit. Maybe because he was unconscious. Crane should have punched Kurt out there, but his inexperience showed. In the second round, Pellegrino struck Crane near the eye, and when Crane grimaced, held his face and rolled, the fight was called.
*My pick for KO of the night. *Fight of the night.

UFC Fight Night 12
Preview by the MMA Blaster
Tonight on Spike at 8:00 pm CST will be the UFC's installment of their 12th Ultimate Fight Night series. Given that their are seven lightwieght contests you tell the division is starting to get crowded and that a 145 pound featherweight division may be needed. Like most MMA fans, I'd much rather see Spike squeeze an extra fight or two because I'm interested to see how some of the undercard plays out.
MAIN CARD
WW- Josh Burkman (9-4) vs. Mike Swick (10-2)- Mike Swick is making his debut at 170 following his loss to Yushin Okami. Previously, Swick had won five straight at 185. Burkman is 5-2 in the UFC with his last four fights going to decision.
MW- Patrick Côté (11-4) vs. Drew McFedries (6-2)- Côté has won two straight in the UFC and one in the TKO since his loss to Travis Lutter for the TUF 4 title. McFredreis recently KO'd Jordan Radev in 33 seconds, his previous fight saw him losing via a deep arm triangle by Martin Kampmann.
LW- Thiago Tavares (12-1) vs. Michihiro Omigawa (4-5)- Thiago was undefeated before losing a decision to Tyson Griffin in his last bout. Judo master Omigawa lost in his last UFC fight to Matt Wiman.
LW- Nate Diaz (7-2) vs. Alvin Robinson (9-2)- TUF 5 winner Nate Diaz looks to keep the win streak going. His last loss was to Hermes Franca at WEC 24. Robinson beat Jorge Gurgel in his last fight and lost to Kenny Florian previously in his UFC career.
