UFC 110 Preview
UFC 110 airs from Sydney, Australia on February 21, 2010 in the UFC's first venture down under. There are numerous fights with title implications, though no belts will be on the line.
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cain Velasquez- Expect Cain Velasquez, the two time All American wrestler from ASU, to look to get the fight to the ground early and often. He will look to throw punches and elbows in bunches from the guard. The explosive Velasquez (7-0, 5-0 UFC) has six TKO's on his resume, defeating Ben Rothwell, Cheick Kongo and Ben Morris in his last three fights.

Big Nog's UFC results have been somewhat mixed, as has battled staff infections and nagging injuries. In his last fight, Nog battled UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, defeating him via decision. Nog also has victories over Tim Sylvia, Sergei Kharitonov, Mirko Filipović, Mark Coleman and Dan Henderson in his career.

Michael Bisping vs. Wanderlei Silva- This 185 pound tilt will push the winner one step closer to the title. Both are primarily stand-up fighters who will be swinging for the fences. TUF 3 champ Michael Bisping (18-2, 8-2 UFC) will be looking to get his second straight win after TKO'ing Denis Kang in his last fight. Bisping also has UFC wins over Eric Schafer and Chris Leben.

Wanderlei Silva (32-10,2-5 UFC) was a legend in the Pride organization, known for his brawling Muay Thai arsenal. However, Wandy has been on a slide as of late, losing 5 of his last 6 fights. Wandy is the former Pride Middleweight Champ (205) having defeated Rampage Jackson, Kazushi Sakuraba, Guy Mezger and Minowaman in his career.

George Sotiropoulos vs. Joe Stevenson- This fight pits two excellent grapplers against each other. Stevenson (31-10, 8-4 UFC) has the distinct experience advantage and has battled much better competition. Stevenson, a TUF 2 winner, has looked revitalized since joining Greg Jackson's camp, going 2-0 defeating Spencer Fisher and Nate Diaz.

George Sotiropoulous is a solid grappler who will be fighting on his home court in Australia. George was on Team Serra during TUF 6, KO'ing Jared Rollins and submitting Richie Hightower before getting KO'd by runner-up Tommy Speer. Since joining the UFC, he has gone 4-0 submitting Billy Miles, George Roop and Jason Dent.
Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic vs. Anthony Perosh- Ben Rothwell, Cro Cop's original opponent has withdrawn from the fight due to illnes. Cro Cop (25-7, 2-3 UFC) has not looked good in his UFC career, but should rebound against Perosh. Cro Cop is a former K-1 kickboxer and Pride superstar was on top of his game in 2006, winning the Pride Open Weight Grand Prix, defeating Josh Barnett, Wanderlei Silva, Minowaman and Hidehiko Yoshida.

Ryan Bader vs. Keith Jardine- This fight pits TUF 8 winner and All-American wrestler Ryan Bader (10-0, 3-0 UFC) against TUF 2 veteran and unorthodox striker Keith Jardine (15-6, 6-5 UFC). UFC 104 - Dragon Fire
I waited to release my review of this event until I watched the Lyoto Machida versus Shogun Rua fight again. After five lackluster but technically impressive fight was won by Lyoto Machida on all three score cards. However, the viewing audience, Joe Rogaine and myself all saw it for Shogun.
Here are the results:
Lyoto Machida def Shogun Rua via unanimous dec- This title fight has turned controversial following all three judges awarding the fight to champion Lyoto Machida with 48-47. Throughout the fight Shogun seemed to land hard leg and body kicks. Machida seemed to back peddle and throw punches.
The body and leg kicks thrown by the more aggressive Rua led to me believing he had won the 1st, 4th and 5th rounds. Rua continually controlled where the fight to place and was consistently showing better aggression. Machida did gets some nice punces in at times, but seemed to never get into rhythem.
Dana White has indicated both fighters have agreed to an immediate rematch. Unfortunately, Machida suffered a laceration to his lip and was suspended without contact for 60 days. Look for the fight to possibly take place in February.

Cain Velasquez def Ben Rothwell via TKO (punches) R2, 0:58- Cain Velasquez bullied the larger Ben Rothwell, eventually knocking him senseless in the second round. Velasquez dominated Rothwell with his superior wrestling and power punching from the ground.
The victory would have seemed to earn Cain a title shot. However, champ Brock Lesnar suffered an illness pushing back his fight with Shane Carwin. It appears Velasquez could fight Junior Dos Santos next.
Joe Stevenson def Spencer Fisher via TKO (elbows) R1, 4:03- Joe Stevenson continues his rise back up to the top of his game since joining Team Jackson. The submission grappler knew his best shot at victory would be to get the fight to the ground. Fisher was able to deny Stevenson's takedowns for a little while before succeeding.
Once the fight was on the ground, Stevenson was able to get Fisher's arm trapped in a crucifix, reminiscant of the Roy Nelson versus Kimbo fight. Elbows came in bunches and the ref was forced to stop the fight.

Anthony Johnson def Yoshiyuki Yoshida via KO (punch) R1, 0:41- Anthony Johnson sacrificed some pay for missing weight in this contest, but he didn't sacrifice his performance. Johnson briefly attempted to clinch, backed out and crushed Yoshida with a right hand knocking him into another universe and ending the fight.
Pat Barry def Antoni Hardonk by TKO (punches) R2, 2:30- In what turned out to be the fight of the night, Pat Barry and Antoni Hardonk threw down in an absolute battle. Hardonk started the action landing some big leg kicks and big punches. Barry looked to use his quickness, before Barry then was struck deep in the eye by Hardonk.
After a brief injury time out, Barry began to find his range with straight punches. Barry dropped Hardonk with a jab, landing in side mount dropping additional punishment. In the second round, Barry's speed was too much for Hardonk as he dropped him with straight punches before the finisher, a right hand to Hardonk's temple.

Stefan Struve def Chase Gormley via sub (triangle) R1, 4:04- After the gigantic Struve landed some big kicks, Gormley worked the fight to the ground. From there, the two attempted leg locks. After Struve got top position he worked for a triangle and leaned to his back, getting Gormley to succumb to the choke.

UFC 104 Preview

The event will feature a ppv card as well as at least 2 undercard bouts on an hour lead-in segment on Spike TV. If one of the undercard bouts ends in the first round it could make one of the broadcasts.
Lyoto Machida vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua- The undefeated champ Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida (15-0) will look to defend the title he aquired while violently KO'ed Rashad Evans in the second round of their 205 bout. Shogun (18-3) will look to continue the momentum he has built off a first round KO of Chuck Liddell.
Lyoto Machida and his karate base make a fight with the Brazilian very difficult. Shogun will look to utilize his muay thai, attacking his knees, kicks and elbows. Machida is very elusive and often forces his opponents to lose their cool and rush in, leaving an opening for Machida to pick them apart.

Ben Rothwell vs. Cain Velasquez- Former IFL Heavyweight star Ben Rothwell will take on fast rising Cain Velasquez in a fight that could send Velasquez to a potential title shot. Rothwell would likely need another big time victory.
Cain Velasquez (6-0, 4-0 UFC) has the wrestling advantage, and his best strategy would be to get the fight to the ground and delivering a healthy dose of ground and pound. Velasquez' defeated Cheick Kongo in his last match via decision, while taking a couple big punches. He also has victories over Jake O'Brien and Denis Stojnic.

Ben Rothwell (30-6) compiled a 9-0 record while in the IFL, defeating the likes of Roy Nelson, Krzysztof Soszynski, Ricco Rodriguez and Dan Bobish. Look for Rothwell to keep the fight standing, throwing power punches while utilizing his height and weight advantage.

TUF 9 Finale - UK Domination
The TUF 9 Finale was a sold out show at the Palms in Las Vegas. Commercials were abundant in this three hour broadcast on Spike. Despite both being seen as slight underdogs, UK's Ross Pearson and James Wilks came out TUF 9 champions.
Diego Sanchez def Clay Guida via split dec- This fight was a bloody three round war. The first round was all Sanchez as he landed big uppercuts and combinations before he nailed Guida with a perfect high kick sending him to the canvas. Guida would never stop coming throughout the fight, despite blood pouring out of his wounds.
Guida would go on to storm back in the second, getting takedowns to secure top position winning the round with his ground and pound assault. The third round was very close, with Sanchez almost getting a guillotine. Then he unleashed some serious elbows from the ground. The judges gave Sanchez a split decision victory.
*Awarded Fight of the Night Bonus.
James Wilks def DaMarques Johnson via sub (rear-naked choke) R1, 4:54- James Wilks first got some strikes in before the fight went to the ground. From there, it was all Wilks as he transitioned from submission attempt to attempt. With time running down in the first, Wilks got the back of Johnson and sunk in the winning choke. *James Wilks wins the 170 pound TUF 9 Title.

Chris Lytle def Kevin Burns via unanimous dec- Burns looked to dominate in the first round, landing an uppercut that nearly had Lytle out. However, in the second and third, Lytle came back, overwhelming Burns. In the third, Lytle opened up a gash on Burns' head, and blood started to pour. All three judges awarded the fight to Lytle.

Ross Pearson def Andre Winner via unanimous dec- Ross Pearson took the 155 pound title in a three round scrap against Andre Winner. While working mostly in the clinch, the fighters traded shots throughout the fight. Pearson seemed to control the fight more and was awarded the decision victory.

Joe Stevenson def Nate Diaz via unanimous dec- Nate Diaz nearly had a deep guillotine in the first round, but that was the closest he came to victory. Stevenson was the stronger fighter, landing shots and controlling the action on the ground. Stevenson credited the win to his 6 week training camp at Greg Jackson's camp in New Mexico. "It's like having Chuck Norris in your corner, it's just unfair" remarked Stevenson post fight.

Ross Pearson def Andre Winner via unanimous dec- Ross Pearson took the 155 pound title in a three round scrap against Andre Winner. While working mostly in the clinch, the fighters traded shots throughout the fight. Pearson seemed to control the fight more and was awarded the decision victory.

Joe Stevenson def Nate Diaz via unanimous dec- Nate Diaz nearly had a deep guillotine in the first round, but that was the closest he came to victory. Stevenson was the stronger fighter, landing shots and controlling the action on the ground. Stevenson credited the win to his 6 week training camp at Greg Jackson's camp in New Mexico. "It's like having Chuck Norris in your corner, it's just unfair" remarked Stevenson post fight.

UFC 95 Preview
UFC 95 will be taking place this Saturday in London, England. Lucky for us fans, the event will be shown live on Spike TV. All fighters made weight and will be ready to go tomorrow.
Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Stevenson- The main event pits two TUF champs against eachother in a 155 pound bout. This will be Diego's first match at 155 pounds. I expect Diego to try to keep the fight standing, attempting to utilize his reach advantage. Stevenson will likely try to take the fight to the ground looking for ground and pound.
Sanchez (19-2) has been on a roll beating Luigi Fioravanti and David Bielkheden in his last two bouts. Previous to those bouts, Diego lost two decisions to Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch, while battling a staff infection that took a chunk out of his leg. Diego has big wins against Kenny Florian, Jorge Santiago, Joe Riggs, Nick Diaz and Karo Parisyan.

In Markham's debut, he destroyed Brodie Farbar with the nastiest head kick of 2008. He will be looking to brawl and get the KO of the night. In his 16 wins, he has 11 KO/TKO's and 5 submissions. Markum's big wins have come over Brad Blackburn, Pat Healy and Mike Pyle.

Dan Hardy is a solid fighter with technically sound stand-up. At 6 feet tall, he usually has a reach advantage when he fights. Hardy won a razor thin split decision over Akihiro Gono in his UFC debut. Hardy's big wins have come over Hidetaka Monma, Chad Reiner and Daniel Weichel.

Marquardt (27-8-2) is a former King of Pancrase who has gone 6-2 in the UFC. In his last fight he overwelmed Martin Kampmann in a first round TKO. Marquardt has victories over Jeremy Horn, Dean Lister, Joe Doerksen, Kazou Misaki and Yves Edwards. Look for Marquardt to take Gouveia to the mat.

Gouveia has 7 submission and 4 (T)KO wins with victories over Jason MacDonald, Jason Lambert, Jon Fitch and Seth Petruzelli in his career.
Demian Maia vs. Chael Sonnen- This bout would seem to be a grappling war. BJJ blackbelt Demian Maia has made everyone he's fought in the UFC look out of his league. Chael Sonnen is a superb wresler who will probably stand and trade with Maia, using his wrestling to keep the fight standing.

UFC 91 Preview
UFC 91 will be held in Las Vegas on November 15, 2008. I'll probably be watching at a local watering hole here in Chicago. With the drawing power of Lesnar and Couture, the ppv buy record for an MMA broadcast will probably be shattered. All fighters made weight with Randy Couture tipping the scales at 220 pounds. Brock Lesnar weighed the max at 265. In the other HW clash, Gabriel Gonzaga came in at 256 while Josh Hendricks came in at 238.
Randy Couture (16-8, 13-5 UFC) vs. Brock Lesnar (2-1, 1-1 UFC)- This is the main event for the UFC Heavyweight title. Couture has been absent from the cage for 14 months while involved in a contract dispute. It is still unclear what Couture will do after this fight as he wants a fight with Fedor.
Couture beat Tim Sylvia to win the HW belt and defeated Gabriel Gonzaga in his title defense. Prior to that fight Couture had lost to Chuck Liddell at 205 pounds in 2006. Couture has been fighting since 1997, winning a four man tournament at UFC 13 in his debut. Couture's big wins have been against Vitor Belfort, Tito Ortiz, Pedro Rizzo, Kevin Randleman, Maurice Smith and one victory over Chuck Liddell (2 losses to Liddell).
Lesnar is a NCAA HW Champion wrestler at the University of Minnesota and placed second in his junior year. Lesnar destroyed Min Soo Kim in his debut with K-1 Hero's(now Dream) with a takedown and ground and pound. He lost his UFC debut to Frank Mir, despite laying a beating on Mir for the first 1:15 of the fight. Unfortunately, Brock got a little overconfident and lost via kneebar. In his last fight he dominated veteran fighter Heath Herring in a decision.
Both fighters are legit wrestlers with power. Couture has a big advantage in terms of experience, but on the flipside is 45 year old and not getting any younger. Couture will look to use dirty boxing in the clinch to win. He will also have to be ready to fight off his back as Lesnar has excellent takedowns.
Lesnar will look to use his speed to get a takedown. From there he has to make his punches count and defend submissions against the cagey veteran. Lesnar will come in with a sizable weight advantage, probably 40+ pounds. Lesnar is also deceptively quick and athletic for his size.
Kenny Florian (10-3) vs. Joe Stevenson (29-8)- This fight will be for a shot at BJ Penn's 155 pound crown. Expect Florian to try to keep the fight standing where he has been improving his Muay Thai game. Expect Stevenson to attempt to get the fight to the ground where he can try to utilize his ground game. Stevenson received his BJJ black belt recently.
Florian is on quite a roll in his UFC career since his loss to Sean Sherk for the 155 pound title. He has beaten Dokonjonosuke Mishima, Alvin Robinson, Din Thomas, Joe Lauzon and Roger Huerta. Stevenson recently defeated Gleison Tibau via guillotine choke. Stevenson also holds wins over Yves Edwards, Kurt Pellegrino and Melvin Guillard and Luke Cummo in the UFC.
Gabriel Gonzaga (9-3) vs. Josh Hendricks (15-4)- Gonzaga is coming off a kimura win over Justin McCulley after back to back TKO losses to Randy Couture and Fabricio Werdum. Gonzaga is 5-2 in the UFC with wins over Cro Cop, Carmelo Marrero and Fabiano Scherner. Hendricks is a two-time All American wrestler who has won his past 10 fights. His best wins have come against Todd Brown (4-1) and Steve Conkel (13-4).

Cole Miller def. Jorge Gurgel Submission (Triangle Choke) R3 4:48 - You can watch this one on UFC.com. It was a match that I had Gurgel winning going into 12 seconds left in the match. Miller locked in a triangle at the last second.

Tyson Griffin def. Marcus Aurelio Decision (Unanimous)- Griffin was the clear winner as he unleased kicks, punches and lunging attacks to get the decision victory.
Josh Koscheck def. Chris Lytle Decision (Unanimous)- Koscheck was able to get takedowns and throw down elbows to win one of the most bloodiest fights of the year.
Joe Stevenson def. Gleison Tibau Submission (Guillotine choke) R2 2:57- This was an exciting fight as Steven looked for submission after submission. He had a very close attempt at a guillotine in the first, and ended up securing one in the second.
Patrick Cote def. Ricardo Almeida Decision (Split)- Cote barely scored a victory after losing the first round and probably taking the second two. Almeida was able to get takedowns, but got tired after the first. Cote had good energy, but didn't look like a guy who should be getting a title shot right away.
Forrest Griffin def. Quinton Jackson Decision (Unanimous)- Jackson won the first round with a punch that sent Forrest to the canvas. Rampage had suffered damage to his leg in the first however, which slowed him in the first. Griffin won the second round on more leg kicks. The rest of the rounds saw Jackson landing more punches and Griffin more kicks. I had it scored very close, as Griffin came out the winner.
With the win, Griffin has proved he is the real deal. It will be interesting to see what match-ups are possible. We could see Forrest v. Wanderlei Silva, Forrest v. Chuck Liddell, Forrest v. Lyoto Machida, or possibly Forrest v. Rampage 2.

TUF Road For Amir
Here is a look at how Amir Sadollah's run on The Ultimate Fighter stacks up to some of the previous season's champs. Amir had to win more times than anyone else, 5, as for the first time there were 32 competitors in the tournament. Amir's first opponent, Steve Byrnes had fought in the UFC. UFC 80 Results
UFC 80 was a better ppv than many expected. With the tempature at 5 degrees Saturday night, it was an easy decision to get it. The main card was basically all early stoppages and most were pretty good contests. No fight of the year canidates, but solid.
B.J. Penn def. Joe Stevenson via sub (rear-naked choke) — R2. 4:02
*BJ dominated the fight from start to finish. A nasty elbow opened up a gash on Stevenson's hairline and the blood flowed until the perfect rear naked choke that BJ sunk in near the end of the second. Probably a fight where one could say elbows should be banned from the UFC.
Fabricio Werdum def. Gabriel Gonzaga via TKO (strikes) — R2, 4:34
*Gonzaga won the first round with devastating low kicks. He was probably winning the second round too, until he missed with a high kick. Werdum capitalized and punched Gonzaga into submission.
Marcus Davis def. Jess Liaudin via KO (punch) — R1, 1:04
*Didn't take long, basically a left hook put Liaudin to the canvas. Davis needs to fight someone elite next.

*Lambert dominated the first round with a takedown and punches. In the second, he looked to continue his ways, but in a flurry was hit right on the button and sent to the floor hard.

*Kendall's fighting career is trouble right now with back to back losses. He was manhandled by Rivera who had just been crushed by Terry Martin.

UFC 80 - Penn v. Stevenson
After testing positive for steroids and losing an appeal (even though fine was reduced) Sean Sherk was stripped of his lightweight title. Fighting for the open lightweight title are BJ Penn and Joe Stevenson. The ppv will be airing live at 3pm EST, and again on tape delay 10pm EST. Here are the fights:
B.J. Penn (11-4) vs. Joe Stevenson (28-7)(for lightweight title)- After watching BJ's training on Countdown to UFC 80, I'm sure he can pull this win out. BJ is watching his diet, training like a cardio machine, and seeing the stretching demonstration made me think he has something coming for Stevenson. Stevenson is no slouch, but I just don't think he has the experience against A-level kind of competition. He seems to be a little too much in awe of BJ. Pick- Penn sub rd 3.
Gabriel Gonzaga (8-2) vs. Fabricio Werdum (9-3)- This is a big fight for both fighters as they are both coming off losses in big fights. Werdum is talking about ending the fight in the first round, but I don't see it happeneing. Pick- Gonzaga TKO rd 3.
Marcus Davis (13-3) vs. Jess Liaudin (12-8)- I would have liked to see Davis take on a legit title contender. Davis is riding a 10 fight win streak with 5 straight in the UFC. Liaudin has won 5 straight including 2 wins in the UFC. Pick- Davis KO rd 2.
Kendall Grove (8-4) vs. Jorge Rivera (14-6)- Both fighters are coming off losses. Pick- Grove TKO rd 3.
Jason Lambert (23-6) vs. Wilson Gouveia (9-4)- Lambert is coming off a huge win over Babalu, but that was last March. Gouveia has three wins in a row since his decision loss to Jardine. Pick- Gouveia wins by unanimous decision.
