Chris Lytle retired on a high note by submitting Dan Hardy at UFC on Versus 5. Lytle has always been a fan favorite and bonus bounty hunter by utilizing pro level boxing skills, solid wrestling with an underrated submission game.
Chris fought all around the world, defeating Kazuo Misaki in Pancrase, Aaron Riley in Hook and Shoot, Pat Healy in the WEC, and Mike Brown, Kyle Bradley, Paul Taylor, Brian Foster and Matt Serra in the UFC.

MMA Blaster 2010 Awards
Thanks so much for those who emailed in their nominations for for the annual MMA Blaster year end awards. 2010 saw some insane action in all major promotions. It saw a legend get defeated, new stars emerge, the judges completely blow some fights and competitors constantly changing the landscape of the fight game.
Male Fighter of the Year Zuffa (UFC/WEC)- Anthony Pettis went 4-0 in 2010 with four jaw dropping performances. Pettis started the year by delivering a nasty head kick to Danny Castillo. In his second bout, he submitted Alex Karelexis with a triangle choke. To get his title shot, Pettis fought Shane Roller in an absolute barn burner, securing a triangle with only 9 seconds left in the 3rd. In his year end finale, Pettis went toe to toe with Ben Henderson for 5 rounds of action in the fight of the year, delivering the super kick heard round the world.
Runners Up- Dominick Cruz went 3-0, defeating Brian Bowles via TKO for the 135 pound title, then defended twice with decision wins over Joe Benavidez and Scott Jorgenson. Cain Velasquez scored two big time KO's over Antonio Nogueira and Brock Lesnar to get the HW title. Jose Aldo defended his 145 pound title twice against Urijah Faber and Manny Gamburyan. Anderson Silva defended the belt twice, with a slick comeback submission win over Chael Sonnen.
Male Fighter of the Year Outside Zuffa- Hatsu Hioki went 3-0 in Sengoku and Shooto taking the Sengoku Featherweight Championship with a dominant performance over Marlon Sandro. Hioki will likely see matches in Shooto and Sengoku in 2011. Many fans are hoping he finds his way into the UFC's 145 pound division, but that might be a long shot.
Runners Up- Hector Lombard went 5-0 in 2010 culminating with a unanimous decision win over Alexander Schmelko for the 185 pound Bellator title. Rafeal Calvancante won 2 including a TKO over Mo Lawal to take the Strikeforce 205 pound title. Joe Warren went 4-0 to take the Bellator 145 pound tournament and title. Nick Diaz went 3-0 with wins over KJ Noons, Hayoto Sakurai and Marius Zaromskis.
Female Fighter of the Year- Zoila Frausto punched her ticket to the Bellator Women's tournament with a big time knee KO of Rosi Sexton at Bellator 23. The Warrior Princess won the inagural tournament with solid striking in wins over Jessica Pene, Jessica Aguilar and women's MMA legend Megumi Fujii.
Runners Up- Meisha Tate went 4-0 in 2010 scoring two wins in one night at Strikeforce's 135 pound tourney. Cris "Cyborg" Santos notched a KO of Jen Finney and TKO of Marloes Coenen in 2010.
Fight of the Year- Anthony Pettis wins a unanimous decision over Ben Henderson in a bout that was non-stop action. Top notch striking and grappling were displayed, with each fighter getting the others back. With the fight close near the end, Pettis launched off the fence doing his best impersonation of a ninja, smacking Henderson in the face, sealing the win.
Runners Up- Jorge Santiago and Kazuo Misaki battle for the MW Sengoku title at SRC 14, with Santiago notching a TKO in the 5th round. Chris Leben scored an amazing 3rd round triangle to dash Yoshihiro Akiyama's lead on the scorecards at UFC 116. Anthony Pettis throws out all the stops with innovative tactics and slick triangle against Shane Roller WEC 50. Brock Lesnar came back from the brink of defeat to secure an arm triangle submission in the second round of the HW title fight at UFC 116. Chan Sung Jung and Leonard Garcia might not have had much technique, but let it all go in an epic slugfest at WEC 48.
Submission of the Year- Fabricio Werdum shocks the MMA world by tapping MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko with a triangle choke victory in the first round. Werdum was hit by a fairly decent shot and tumbled to the canvas, soon after Fedor pounced, he was baited into a triangle/armbar combo.

Up and coming Brazilian Charles Oliveira's standing rear naked choke on Efrain Escudero at UFC fight night 22. Mark Bocek's triangle over Dustin Hazelett at UFC 124. Marloes Coenen's armbar over undefeated Sarah Kaufman at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons II to take the women's 135 pound title. Cole Miller's modified kimura over Dan Lauzon at UFC 108. Scott Jorgensen guillotines Chad George against the fence at WEC 47. Shinya Aoki's win in the battle of leg locks with an achilles lock submission over Tatsuya Kawajiri.
KO of the Year - Kick/Knee/Slam- Gerald Harris slams David Branch into oblivion at UFC 116. With Harris up two rounds in the scorecards, David Branch made the mistake of pulling guard. Harris used the opportunity channel his inner hulk and power slam Branch, knocking him out cold.
Runners Up- Zoila Frausto's big time knee KO over Rosi Sexton at Bellator 23. George Roop destroys Chang Sung Jung with a head kick at WEC 53. Eddie Wineland does his best Rampage Jackson impression in a wicked slam of Ken Stone at WEC 53. Pablo Garza lands a monster flying knee against Fredson Paixo at UFC's TUF 12 Finale. Sarah Kaufman KO'd Roxanne Modafferi via slam at Strikeforce Challengers 9 for the women's 135 pound title.
KO of the Year - Hands/Elbow- Robbie Lawler who on the brink of defeat crushed Melvin Manhoef in Strikeforce - Miami. Lawler was eating leg kicks throughout the fight, with the kicks from the K-1 veteran Manhoef sending Lawler's lead leg high into the air. Looking to throw another kick, Lawler landed a punch on the button knocking Manhoef unconscious.
Runners Up- Carlos Condit flattened Dan Hardy at UFC 120 with a big time punch as each fighter is throwing hands. Mike Russow took a beating for two rounds before throwing a punch that lands clean, knocking hyped prospect Todd Duffee out. Shogun Rua crushed the undefeated Lyoto Machida in the first round of UFC 113 to take the 205 pound title. Marlon Sandro lands big punches and sends Masanori Kanehara to the mat face first at Sengoku 13. Maciej Jewtuszko TKOs Anthony Njokuani at WEC 50 with a spinning backfist. Paul Daley sends Scott Smith to the canvas face first in Strikeforce. Takanori Gomi scores a big KO over Tyson Griffin at UFC Live on Versus 2.
Top Up and Coming Prospect Zuffa- Phil Davis went 4-0 in 2010 with 2 submissions against Tim Boetsch and Alexander Gustafsson. The former NCAA champion will look to take a big step up in competition during his 2011 run in the 205 pound division. Phil's submission game and athleticism should carry him a long way in his journey in the UFC's 205 pound division.
Runners Up- Edson Mendes Barboza Jr. went 4-0 with 4 T/KO's in 2010 with a successful UFC debut against Mike Lullo, rocking him with an assortment of stinging leg kicks.
Top Up and Coming Prospect Outside Zuffa- United States Olympic wrestling captain Daniel Cormier has made a successful transition to MMA, going 5-0 with 3 submissions and 2 TKO wins. Cormier took the King of the Cage and XMMA heavyweight belts in addition to 2 wins in Strikeforce. His submission via punches win over slugger Soa Palelei was a big feather in his cap.
Runners Up- Cole Konrad went 7-0 in 2010 scoring a keylock submission win over Neil Grove to win the Bellator heavyweight tournament.
Comeback Fighter of the Year- Chris Lytle went 3-0 in the UFC, submitting Mike Brown and Brian Foster while avenging a loss to Matt Serra. Lytle has worked himself up the UFC ladder with gutsy performances that are always entertaining.
Runners Up- Michihiro Omigawa went 3-0 with wins over Micah Miller and Cole Escovedo earning a ticket to the UFC. Omigawa's striking has continued to improve greatly since his first stint in the UFC. UFC 116 Lesnar v. Carwin Preview
On July 3rd, the MMA world will be shaken up and spit out after two behemouths brawl for the UFC Heavyweight Title. Inside the octogan will be two 265 pound monsters of epic proportion. The winner will be holding a belt and the world #1 rank in the heavyweight division.
Brock Lesnar v. Shane Carwin- This bout will unify the heavyweight title and be the toughest test to date for both fighters. Each fighter is an athletic freak, with massive hands, insane power, and quickness seldom seen for a 265 pound man. The key to each fighter will be avoiding a big punch standing and getting takedowns.
Brock Lesnar (4-1), an NCAA Division 1 HW champ, burst on the scene nearly three years ago in a K-1 bout in Los Angeles. In that fight, Lesnar destroyed Min Soo Kim in just over a minute. He would then enter the UFC to initial lukewarm results. Lesnar was beating up Frank Mir at UFC 81, before a ridiculous stand-up from Steve Mazagatti. Lesnar was then too aggressive and was knee-barred by the BJJ blackbelt.

Lesnar would get his revenge on Mir at UFC 100, getting a big takedown and nasty ground and pound shots. Lesnar earned his way back to the rematch after a three round beating of Heath Herring at UFC 87, and a KO of legend Randy Couture at UFC 91. Look for Lesnar to try to out wrestle Carwin and lay down massive GNP.
Shane Carwin (12-0) has an insane streak of 12 straight wins in the first round. In his last fight, he clubbed Frank Mir at UFC 111, knocking out his foe in just under 4 minutes, his longest fight to date. Carwin also has victories over Gabriel Gonzaga, Christian Wellish and Rex Richards. Carwin will most likely try to out box Lesnar, trying to defend takedowns.

Yoshihiro Akiyama v. Chris Leben- Big time props have to be given to Chris Leben (20-6) stepping up and taking this fight on short notice after Wanderlei Silva was forced out with a rib injury. Leben is going to look to brawl in this fight, getting inside on Akiyama. Leben is coming off a big KO win over previously undefeated Aaron Simpson.
Akiyama (13-1), a black belt in Judo and Shotokan Karate, will mostly look to keep his distance with body and leg kicks, before getting the fight to the ground. Akiyama will have a big advantage on the ground, having submission wins over dangerous strikers Melvin Manhoef and Francois Botha. Akiyama has other wins over Alan Belcher and Denis Kang.

Matt Brown v. Chris Lytle- Expect this fight to be a stand-up war between two solid fighters. Lytle (28-17) is known for his crowd pleasing style and willingness to take risks, and he will in this fight. Lytle is currently riding a two fight win streak over Brian Foster and Kevin Brown.
Matt Brown (11-8) has been improving dramatically since his run of TUF 7. Brown defeated TUF 9 champ James Wilks, Pete Sell and Ryan Thomas before his last fight, a submission loss to Ricardo Almeida. Expect Brown to slug it out, with each fighter having the possibility of snagging a fight of the night bonus.

TUF 9 Finale - UK Domination
The TUF 9 Finale was a sold out show at the Palms in Las Vegas. Commercials were abundant in this three hour broadcast on Spike. Despite both being seen as slight underdogs, UK's Ross Pearson and James Wilks came out TUF 9 champions.
Diego Sanchez def Clay Guida via split dec- This fight was a bloody three round war. The first round was all Sanchez as he landed big uppercuts and combinations before he nailed Guida with a perfect high kick sending him to the canvas. Guida would never stop coming throughout the fight, despite blood pouring out of his wounds.
Guida would go on to storm back in the second, getting takedowns to secure top position winning the round with his ground and pound assault. The third round was very close, with Sanchez almost getting a guillotine. Then he unleashed some serious elbows from the ground. The judges gave Sanchez a split decision victory.
*Awarded Fight of the Night Bonus.
James Wilks def DaMarques Johnson via sub (rear-naked choke) R1, 4:54- James Wilks first got some strikes in before the fight went to the ground. From there, it was all Wilks as he transitioned from submission attempt to attempt. With time running down in the first, Wilks got the back of Johnson and sunk in the winning choke. *James Wilks wins the 170 pound TUF 9 Title.

Chris Lytle def Kevin Burns via unanimous dec- Burns looked to dominate in the first round, landing an uppercut that nearly had Lytle out. However, in the second and third, Lytle came back, overwhelming Burns. In the third, Lytle opened up a gash on Burns' head, and blood started to pour. All three judges awarded the fight to Lytle.

Diego Sanchez def Clay Guida via split dec- This fight was a bloody three round war. The first round was all Sanchez as he landed big uppercuts and combinations before he nailed Guida with a perfect high kick sending him to the canvas. Guida would never stop coming throughout the fight, despite blood pouring out of his wounds.
Guida would go on to storm back in the second, getting takedowns to secure top position winning the round with his ground and pound assault. The third round was very close, with Sanchez almost getting a guillotine. Then he unleashed some serious elbows from the ground. The judges gave Sanchez a split decision victory.

James Wilks def DaMarques Johnson via sub (rear-naked choke) R1, 4:54- James Wilks first got some strikes in before the fight went to the ground. From there, it was all Wilks as he transitioned from submission attempt to attempt. With time running down in the first, Wilks got the back of Johnson and sunk in the winning choke. *James Wilks wins the 170 pound TUF 9 Title.

Chris Lytle def Kevin Burns via unanimous dec- Burns looked to dominate in the first round, landing an uppercut that nearly had Lytle out. However, in the second and third, Lytle came back, overwhelming Burns. In the third, Lytle opened up a gash on Burns' head, and blood started to pour. All three judges awarded the fight to Lytle.

UFC 93 Preview
UFC 93 will occur on January 17th in Dublin, Ireland. The event features no title fights, but big bouts in Rich Franklin v. Dan Henderson and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua v. Mark Coleman as well as the arrival of Denis Kang. The fights will be shown on ppv. All fighters made weight. Henderson weighed in at 202 and Mark Coleman came in at 206.
MAIN CARD
Dan Henderson vs. Rich Franklin- This fight will likely determine the coach for the next season of the Ultimate Fighter. Franklin seems to have the edge standing in the match and will have a little bit of a height and reach advantage on Henderson. Henderson should have a sizable advantage grappling wise, but Franklin usually makes people pay when they try to take him down.
Dan Henderson (23-7), the former Pride LHW and MW champ, last fought against Rousimar Palhares winning by unanimous decision. His previous two fights were losses to Anderson Silva and Rampage Jackson, two of the best in the sport. Henderson has wins in his career over Wanderlei Silva, Vitor Belfort, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Murilo Bustamante and Renzo Gracie.

Rich Franklin (24-3), the former UFC MW champ, last fought against Matt Hamill winning with a vicious body kick and punches in the third round. Rich has wins over Yushin Okami, Travis Lutter, David Loiseau, Evan Tanner and Nate Quarry in his career.

Mark Coleman vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua- This fight is a repeat of a prior match-up in Pride which Coleman (15-8) won after a takedown in which Rua's elbow dislocated. Both marquee fighters have been on the shelf for some time due to injuries and other setbacks. Coleman was orginally a rumored opponent for Brock Lesnar, but Coleman sustained a back injury. Rua meanwhile went into the Forrest Griffin fight with a bad knee and has been recovering from surgery since that fight.
Coleman, the Pride 2000 Open Weight Grand Prix winner is also a UFC Hall of Famer, capturing the UFC 10 and 11 tournament championships(4 man) and the HW crown at UFC 12. He is credited with developing the ground and pound strategy and being one of the best wrestlers in MMA during his prime. Coleman has victories over Dan Severn, Don Frye, Igor Vovchanchyn and Kazuyuki Fujita.

Shogun Rua, (16-3) the 2005 Pride Grand Prix (93 kg) winner, was a fast rising star in Pride before its eventual demise. Rua is known for his quickness and striking ability. He has wins in his career over Alistair Overeem, Kevin Randleman, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira(lil Nog), Rampage Jackson, Ricardo Arona and Akihiro Gono.

Alan Belcher vs. Denis Kang- This will be high profile Pride and Spirit MC veteran Denis Kang's (31-10) debut in the UFC. Kang has solid grappling skills, possessing a BJJ black belt, and has developed a decent stand-up game. He has wins over Aikhiro Gono, Andrei Semenov, Murilo "Ninja" Rua and recently over Marvin Eastman via 49 second TKO.

Belcher (13-5) will try to keep this fight standing in order to utilize his Muay Thai skills. Belcher's last fight was a close split decision victory over Ed Herman at an Ultimate Fight Night in September. Belcher has a 4-3 record in the UFC, with a KO victory over highly ranked Jorge Santiago, guillotine choke victory over Sean Salmon and a TKO of Kalib Starnes.

Jeremy Horn vs. Rousimar Palhares- Horn's record is listed as 80-18, but he has fought more than the listed record indicates. The 13 year mma veteran debuted in the UFC at UFC 17 losing to Frank Shamrock for the light heavyweight title (then called middleweight with a 200 pound cut-off). Horn's career highlight was an arm triangle choke of Chuck Liddell at UFC 19. Horn has looked like age may be catching up with him in recent losses to Dean Lister and Nate Marquardt, but still has amazing submission skills with about 50 submission wins in his career. Horn has victories over Daiju Takase, Gilbert Yvel, Travis Fulton, Forrest Griffin, David Loiseau, Chael Sonnen, Trevor Prangley, Falaniko Vitale and many others in his mma career.

Rousimar Palhares is an elite submission fighter with a BJJ blackbelt under Murilo Bustamante. Palhares last lost an uneventual decision to Dan Henderson in which Henderson was unwilling to engage with him on the ground. Palhares debuted in the UFC with an excellent armbar victory over Ivan Salaverry.
Marcus Davis vs. Chris Lytle- This fight promises to be an all out war on the feet. Lytle and Davis have pro boxing backgrounds and will look to use those talents to please the crowd. Both fighters usually please the crowd, having won fight of the night, knockout of the night and submission of the night bonus' from the UFC.
Entertaining the crowd aside, each fighter needs a win at this stage of their career. Davis suffered a loss to Mike Swick at UFC 85 before rebounding at UFC 89 with a guillotine choke victory over Paul Kelly. Lytle had a decision loss to Josh Koscheck at UFC 86 and rebounded with a razor thin decision victory over Paul Taylor at UFC 89. At UFC 89, Lytle asked for a fight with Davis during his post-fight interview.

UFC 86 Preview
Here is a quick preview to UFC 86, which takes place on July 5th. I won't be watching live, as I will be in the wilderness. I'll get a review up once I see all the fights.
Quinton Jackson vs. Forrest Griffin (LHW Championship)- Rampage has respect for Forrest's ground game, so expect this one to stay standing. Jackson has been training at a high level, as is Forrest. Both will look to keep this an entertaining fight. Forrest is always in top shape, so don't expect him to gas.
Jackson has six straight victories, including 3 straight in the UFC. Forrest has two straight victories in the UFC since his loss to Keith Jardine. Forrest is coming off a huge victory over Shogun Rua. Jackson is coming off huge wins over Dan Henderson, Chuck Liddell and Marvin Eastman. Both have been on the shelf for quite awhile because of The Ultimate Fighter reality show.

UFC 2007 Recap
According to MMAjunkie.com, Spike will be airing a UFC 2007 recap show featuring the best of the 2007 UFC fights. In addition, the show will play some unseen fights from undercards. Alves v. Lytle from UFC 78 would be nice. There is no doubt the UFC has had a tremendous year in terms of growth. Really, the purchases of Pride, the WFA and the WEC were the highlights of the year. The stable of fighters the UFC currently boasts is definately better than any of the competition. What fights for the UFC were there best of 2007? Lytle v. Alves will be a brawl from start to finish. Alves (12-3), ATT, is coming off three straight wins in the UFC after a loss to Jon Fitch. His last win came off Shooto veteren Kuniyoshi Hironoka (11-4). After Alves' win over Tony DeSouza (10-3) Alves was suspended for use of diruetics. His notable wins come over John Alessio (20-10), Jason "Hollywood" Chambers (16-5), Ansar Chalangov (7-3), Derrick Noble (21-10, lost once to Noble), and a split dec over Marcus Davis (13-3).
