Fights to Make After Strikeforce - Barnett v. Kharitonov

In a Strikeforce Grand Prix that has already lasted seven months, it is fair to say the luster has been lost to a certain extent. Add in a possible hand injury to finalist Daniel Cormier, as he punished the massive head of Junior "Bigfoot" Silva, and a possible finale might not reach us until the end of the year.

Josh Barnett v. Daniel Cormier- Barnett (31-5) enters the final of the Grand Prix on slick arm-triangle wins over Brett Rogers and Sergei Kharitonov. The former UFC champ, now known as "The Warmaster" will certainly enter the bout as the favorite, looking to strike to set up a takedown to use his vaunted submission skills.

Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier (9-0) tournament route has been off the beaten path, as he began by winning an alternate bout over Jeff Monson. Cormier then had his breakout win this past weekend knocking out the massive Bigfoot. Cormier will definitely let his hands fly again while mixing in takedowns against Barnett.

Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal v. Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante part II for LHW Title- Both men enter the bout on dramatic KO victories. King Mo won his return bout with a first round KO of uber BJJ fighter Roger Gracie, while Feijao (11-3) stopped hyped wrestler Yoel Romero Palacios.

The first bout saw King Mo (8-1), with one bad knee, fighting a stand-up battle and eventually gassing out. A second bout with a healed up Mo would certainly yield fireworks again. The bout could be for the title, as Dan Henderson is without a contract, and likely to return to the UFC.

Luke Rockhold v. Tim Kennedy for MW Title- Rockhold (8-1) had a dominant performance against reigning champ Jacare to take the 185 pound Strikeforce title. The only other fighter on a roll is Kennedy (14-3), who has defeated Robbie Lawler and Melvin Manhoef since his decision loss to the aforementioned Jacare. Rockhold has rattled off 7 straight wins.

Strikeforce - Hendo and Coenen Reign

Strikeforce - Henderson v. Feijao proved an entertaining event with a miraculous come-back victory by Marloes Coenen for the women's 135 pound title. In addition, MMA pioneer Dan Henderson proved he still has big time power with a dramatic knockout of Brazilian powerhouse Rafael "Feijao" Calvancante.

Dan Henderson is a legend of the sport on mixed martial arts, beginning his career in 1997 following an extensive amateur wrestling career. Henderson has competed and won belts in the UFC, Rings, Pride and now Strikeforce. His decorated career has seen him notch victories over Renzo Gracie, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Vitor Belfort, Rich Franklin and Michael Bisping.

On Saturday night, Henderson looked to be giving up plenty of size the Feijao, who had taken the Strikeforce belt with a win over King Mo. In the first round, Feijao and Henderson traded punched before Henderson was dinged with a solid punch. In danger, Henderson bounced back with a takedown and cruised for the remainder of the round.

In the second, Henderson seemed to get the better of the grappling game, working the clinch to perfection. He was again able to get Calvancante to the ground, using technical Greco Roman wrestling. In the third round, Henderson turned the lights out on Feijao throwing a right hand glancing off his chin. Henderson pounced and punched it out.

In the women's title fight, ADCC 3rd place finisher and 22 fight veteran Marloes Coenen might not have known quite what was in store for her entering her fight with 5'4" military veteran Liz Carmouche.

Carmouche, using endless movement, came out like a firecracker against the champ. Following a very close first round, Carmouche's takedowns found their mark as she got Coenen to the ground. Working to full mount, Carmouche brought a relentless ground and pound attack, punishing Coenen.

The third round was more of the same, as Carmouche again landed a takedown directly to side mount, transitioning to full mount and raining down punches. Coenen again was unable to buck Carmouche, as she punished Coenen until the bell.

In the fourth, Coenen was ready for another takedown attempt from Carmouche. As Carmouche brought her to the ground, Coenen set up a triangle that got tighter and tighter, forcing Carmouche to tap at 1:29 of the 4th round.

In other action, special forces combat veteran Tim Kennedy notched a submission win over powerful Dutch striker Melvin Manhoef. Manhoef landed some nasty leg kicks early and defended the first three Kennedy takedown attempts, but one was all Kennedy needed. After getting his takedown, Kennedy took mount, Manhoef rolled, and the rear naked choke was secured.

Here are the full results:

Strikeforce Contenders - Washington

Strikeforce Contenders - Washington was an entertaining fast paced show featuring many great bouts. The card got off to a bang after a huge Luke Rockhold punch rattled Cory Devela, sending him to the canvas before Rockhold sunk in the winning rear naked choke just 30 seconds into the bout.

Army Ranger Tim Kennedy made a successful return to the cage after his recent 18 month deployment in Afganistan. The former sniper used grappling prowess to stay one move ahead of "The Goat" Nick Thompson. While Thompson looked to have a potential keylock/shoulder lock in the first, Kennedy used his strength to overwelm Thompson. In the second, Kennedy scored a nice takedown, then began to land clean ground and pound shots before causing Thompson to tap in the second round.

Jorge Gurgel and Conor Heun fought an action packed 15 minutes. The first two rounds turned into a kickboxing bout despite both holding BJJ blackbelts. Each fighter looked to land power shots throughout the fight, with Heun landing a couple uppercuts, and Gurgel landing big hooks and straight punches. The third round featured a brief glimpse of what each can do on the ground with reversals and Heun working the rubber guard. Eventually, the bout went to the judges who handed the unanimous decision to Gurgel in this close fight.

In the main event, Joey Villasenor and brawler Evangelista Cyborg brought some good kick boxing and ground work throughout the fight. Villasenor was coming back from elbow surgery and hadn't fought in a year. Smoking Joe may have eaten some leg kicks in the fight, but stayed strong and took the split decision.

Female fighters Sarah Kaufman and Shayna Bazler dueled it out for all three rounds. Kaufman was the more powerful fighter as she out-struck Bazler in lieu to a decision victory. Kaufman almost got into some trouble in the first round as Bazler had a knee and arm type choke that turned Kaufman's face red. However, the ref consistently called for action and may have altered Bazler's plans.

Overall, the refs called for action far too often in this card. Fighters would literally be on the ground for three to five seconds before action was called. This, despite the fighters actively trying for a submission or guard pass.

Here are the full results:

Joey Villasenor def Evangelista Cyborg via split dec
Tim Kennedy def Nick Thompson via sub(strikes) R2, 2:37
Jorge Gurgel def Conor Heun via unanimous dec
Sarah Kaufman def Shayna Baszler via unanimous dec
Luke Rockhold def Corey Devela via sub (rear-naked choke) R1, 0:30
Dennis Hallman def Justin Davis via sub (rear naked choke) R1, 0:20
Brian Caraway def Alex Zuniga via unanimous dec
Landon Showalter def George Stork via unanimous dec
Len Bentley def Marques Daniels via unanimous dec
Steve Hadsel def Taylor Roberts via KO (punches) R1, 0:17

Lyle Beerbohm def Duane Ludwig via sub (schoolyard choke) R1, 4:27- I haven't seen this fight, but it was reported that "Fancy Pants" Lyle Beerbohm had the submission of the night with a rare schoolyard choke victory. With the win, Beerbohm is now 10-0 as a pro, after amassing a 12-0 amateur record.

Tim Kennedy - Solid MW You Probably Don't Know About

Thoughts by the MMA Blaster

Nobody knows much about Tim Kennedy (9-2) who is an active army ranger, and an occasional member of the Pit. But with his impressive record and talent we should. He has wins over Jason "Mayhem" Miller (19-5), Dante Rivera (10-2), Ryan McGivern (i5), Hector Urbina (9-3) and Cruz Chacon (11-11). He recently lost a decision to Mayhem Miller, and two weeks later KO'd Elias Rivera.

Kennedy v. McGivern

Tim is an impressive 3-0 in IFL competition, and 1-0 in the WEC. In addition, Tim has fought in the army compatives mma tournaments. In 07', he won his five matches in less than 10 minutes. That tourney win was his third straight.

Video of the Day - Schultz v. Horodecki II

This video shows the second fight between Chris Horodecki and Ryan Schultz, this one for the IFL GP 155 pound title. The first encounter left Schultz unconscious and taken out in a stretcher. The IFL posted this video on youtube.

Rest of the results:
Marcello Salazar def. Alex Cook via unanimous decision, round three

Brett Cooper def. Rory Markham via TKO (strikes) at 1:15 of round two - Brett Cooper (7-4, 3 wins in a row) is a great young prospect, this was a slugfest.

Tim Kennedy def. Elias Rivera via KO (punch) at 2:30 of round one - Tim Kennedy overmatched Rivera from start to finish. He next takes on Horwich for the MW title on 2/29/08.

-Belts-
Roy Nelson def. Antoine Jaoude via TKO at 0:20 of round two - Roy Nelson (IFL HW Champ) is (11-2, 3 wins in a row) now and looks to be the new Ben Rothwell of the IFL.

Wagnney Fabiano def. L.C. Davis via submission (armbar) at 3:38 of round one - Fabiano (FW champ)(9-1, 5 wins in a row) is the face of the IFL's new featherweight class.

Jay Hieron def. Delson Heleno via TKO (injury due to strikes) at 4:00 of round one - big upset, ex-UFC WW Jay Hieron (14-4) is now the IFL welterweight champ.

Matt Horwich def. Benji Radach via TKO (strikes) at 1:58 of round two - Horwich (MW champ)(21-9, 3 wins in a row) is certainly an interesting character, but his intense, non-stop fighting style is great to watch.

Vladimir Matyushenko (20-3, 7 wins in a row) won the LHW belt in the first round of the grand prix. Vladdy's has had an excellent MMA career with wins over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (12-3, Lil Nog), Pedro Rizzo (16-7), Travis Wiuff (49-11), Yuki Kondo (48-20-6), Alex Schoenauer (12-9) for IFL belt, Anthony Ruiz (21-10) and Travis Fulton (182-44).

HDNet Fight Reckless Abandon Results

Results HDNet Fights II - MMA Blaster

Marcus Lanier def Lee King via Sub (Armbar) R2, 2:58
Liam McCarty def Jason House TKO (Cut) R3, 3:00
Jay White def Patrick Castillo Sub (Armbar) R1, 0:50
Nissen Osterneck def Freddie Espiricueta Sub (Verbal) R1, 2:37
Corey Mahon def Chris Bowles Sub (Armbar) R2, 4:22
Pete Spratt def Tristan Yunker TKO (Cut) R1, 1:38
Krzysztof Soszynski def Robert Villegas DQ (Refusal to Fight) R2, 3:15
Yves Edwards def Alonzo Martinez Sub (Rear Naked Choke) R2, 3:04
Frank Trigg def Edwin Dewees Sub (Kimura) R1, 1:40
Jason Miller def Tim Kennedy Dec (Unanimous)

The results went squeaky clean for HDNet Fights. They were banking on being able to stage a Trigg v. Miller showdown, and lucky for them both won. Also, ex-UFC fighters Edwards and Spratt won, as well as IFL vet Sosynski. Sosynski was a ripped heavyweight in the IFL and apparently went to 205 for this fight. I'm still trying to track down most of the fights on the internet. Unfortunately, like many out there I don't have HDNet, but my girlfriend and her roommates have it. I covertly set a recording for it, but to my disappointment, it was deleted.

My guess for the HDNet plans
155 title- Yves Edwards (1-0 HDNET, 31-13) v. Corey Mahon (1-0 HDNET, 8-0)
170 title- Pete Spratt (2-0 HDNET, 17-10) v. Drew Fickett (1-0 HDNET, 31-5)
185 title- Frank Trigg (1-0 HDNET, 16-6) v. Mayhem Miller (1-0 HDNET, 20-5)
205 title- Soszynski (1-0 HDNET, 13-8) v. Liam McCarty (2-0 HDNET, 7-4)
HW title- Justin Eilers (1-0 HDNET, 18-6) v. Fedor Emelianenko (26-1) (Mark Cuban can get the deal done) (After Fedor wins he can fight Randy Couture for the belt)

HDNet Fights Part II

HDNet Fight Preview by the MMA Blaster

HDNet has a pretty good card is set for December 15th in Dallas. For those unfamiliar with HDNet, it is a television channel owned by Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. The promotion is based out of Dallas and uses the Maverick's arena for the show. Ten of the fighters are from Texas. Here is the fight card:

Jason "Mayhem" Miller (19-5) vs. Tim Kennedy (8-1)
Frank Trigg (15-6) vs. Edwin Dewees (34-10)
Yves Edwards (29-13) vs. Alonzo Martinez (20-8)
Pete Spratt (18-10) vs. Tristan Yunker (12-6)
Chris Bowles (7-1) vs. Cory Mahon (6-0)
Patrick Castillo (3-1) vs. Jay White (1-5)
Krzysztof Soszynski (12-8) vs. Robert Villegas (7-1)
Jason House (7-4) vs. Liam McCarty (6-4)
Lee King (7-11) vs. Marcus Lanier (5-2)
Freddie Espiricueta (5-2)vs. Nissen Osterneck (4-0)

Mayhem v. Kennedy is the match I want to see the most. This is the rematch from their previous fight that Kennedy won by decision. Kennedy explained on 5 Ounces of Pain that it was an extremely bloody fight that was very entertaining.

Overall, this is a great non-ppv card. Five UFC veterens (Spratt, Edwards, Trigg, Dewees, and Miller), IFL vet Soszynski, and other highly touted prospects should make it entertaining.

Tim Kennedy v. Mayhem Miller II scheduled for HDNET Fights

Story by MMA Blaster

While Tim Kennedy should have been placed in the IFL Grand Prix, I am happy to see that he will take on Mayhem Miller on December 15th for HDNet Fights Part II. I haven't been able to track down the footage of the previous Tim Kennedy v. Mayhem Miller fight but it did occur during a tournament hosted by Extreme Challenge on 2/23/07. Miller had fought Denis Kang (23-9) prior to the Kennedy bout and Kennedy had just beat Ryan Narte (1-3). Kennedy won via decision versus Miller and then won the finals bout against Cruz Chacon (11-12).

Kennedy is stepping in for Sean Salmon who was suspended following a devastating knee strike from Jorge Santiago in the Strikeforce tourney. Kennedy is still listed as fighting in the IFL Grand Prix finals on the under card, but I'm guessing that bout may be canceled.

Check out a great exclusive interview of Tim Kennedy on Five Ounces of Pain's website.

IFL Recap and Grand Prix Talk

IFL by the MMA Blaster

On IFL.tv, the IFL officially announced plans for their December 29th Grand Prix finale show. I have been a fan of the IFL and virtually every other MMA league in existence. I had a good time at their May event at the Sears Centre. The format of the IFL drew me in, partly because of the team format and structure which almost resembled a high school wrestling team. Also their stock of fighters made me interested because it included some ex-UFC talent, some B level journeyman, and some legit up and comers who someday will probably dominate the UFC. (Helano, Horodecki, Rothwell, Kennedy, Fabiano)

The team finals came and went, with Renzo Gracie's Pitbulls winning this year and injuries mounting on virtually every team. There were also fighters that were not signed or injured following the team competition. Undefeated IFL fighters Mike Whitehead, Tim Kennedy, Antonio McKee and Ben Rothwell were nowhere to be found in the Grand Prix. Also left out was Red Bear Mark Miller (8-2) who brutally KO'd Josh Neer, had a UD against Brad Blackburn, and lost a UD against the frontrunner in the division Delson Helano.

In an effot to boost hype, the IFL has decided to scrap the Horodecki v. Fabiano fight in the GP, a move that left me quite upset. The IFL has instead tossed in Shad Lierly to fight for the LW title against Horodecki and declared it the "Rematch of the fight of the year." They have decided to drop Fabiano to 145 and have him face LC Davis (9-0)(very talented, but why is he just thrown in there). The 170 final will stay Hieron v. Helano. 185 will stay Horwich v. Radach. And HW will be Nelson v. Jaoude. I was happy to see that they signed Tim Kennedy to fight on the undercard as well as Rory Markum.

The IFL needs to revamp for the next season. My advice, redact a couple more teams to leave the league with 8 or fewer teams (San Jose is gone, add a few more). Pick the teams solely based on the revenue made at each city to ensure good turnouts. Rename the teams based on the camps they are training at. Get Dan Severn to start a team or take one over (Tokyo). Let the fighters advertise on their shorts so they can make more money.

Instead of 3 regular season matches, team championship (2 events), and grand prix (2 events) (possible 7 events in a year) shorten the season. Have 2 or 3 regular season fights to seed the 8 man grand prix (have the grand prix play over 3 events for 5-6 events total). Base the team championship on where fighters place in the Grand Prix. Use the bracket as a marketing strategy like the NCAA tourney and DON'T CHANGE IT UNLESS YOU NEED TO REPLACE AN INJURED FIGHTER WITH AN ALTERNATE. If possible have 3rd place fights to fill in. Have penalties for fighters that do not make weight.

Whatever happens to the IFL, at least they tried something new. I'll post my picks later as the line-up could change.

Shonie pic taken by the MMA Blaster, no doubt that the purple pimp suit was rocking. Whether or not Shonie actually had floor seats is probably an entirely different question.
