How did Fox feel about MMA in 1998?

Fox and the UFC just signed a mega deal that promises four events to be aired on the broadcast network, sure to shatter all MMA ratings records in the United States.

But back in 1998, when MMA was only four years old in this country, Fox took another angle when covering MMA on it show, "Fox Files." It went the underground, illegal, human cockfighting, dangerous, next moral danger route. Headbutts, yeah, they are really dangerous doc, why they weren't the first thing against the rules is beyond me.

You'll see clips of Yves Edwards, Mark Kerr, Eugene Jackson, Tiki. Around the 8 minute mark is a unique clip of an event being busted by the cops, card shuffled after fighters leave; then continuing after the cops leave, which happened quite a bit back in the day.

Here is Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal facing Mark Kerr in M-1 Breakthrough which took place on 8/28/09. King Mo is 6-0 with four victories under the Sengoku banner, which includes TKO's of Travis Wiuff and Fabio Silva. His most recent win was a 1st round KO of Mike Whitehead in Strikeforce.

King Mo, a 2003 NCAA wrestling champ from Oklahoma State, will next fight Gegard Mousasi for the Strikeforce 205 pound title.

M-1 Breakthrough Preview

M-1 Breakthrough should be a decent show broadcasting on HDNet from Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. We will get a shot to take a look at fast rising prospect "King Mo" Lawal as he takes on aging former MMA star Mark Kerr.

Both fighters have NCAA wrestling championships, and excellent pedigrees. However, Kerr is well past his prime and will have trouble dealing with the younger, more athletic Lawal. here is how the card shapes up.

Yamma Results

Yamma Pit Fighting 1 came and went and I would assume there is a 50% chance they pull off another event. The $34.95 price tag of the event steered some away, and apparently they were not heavily sponsored as their cage lacked graphics. Travis Wiuff ended up winning the tournament and as he put it, "now I'll be able to pay some bills." Butterbean went down in a blaze of glory. Apparently if you get the 416 pound Bean to the mat he has problems getting back up. Oleg knee-barred a softer version of Mark Kerr. At least Kerr was able to get a takedown.

WCO Card Down the Drain

The World Cagefighting Organization was supposed to have a star studded lineup of ex-UFC talent for its Saturday show. They included UFC 14 and 15 champ Mark Kerr, ex-UFC heavyweight champ Ricco Rodriguez, UFC vets Renato Sobral, Joe Riggs, David Loiseau, Tiki Ghosn and Carmelo Marrero. According to Sherdog.com, the weigh-in on Friday lasted five hours and Ghosn and Marrero's opponents failed to appear. On Saturday the card disintegrated, the fights didn't happen, and hopefully the fighters got a 20% cut.
