Jansen (20-2) won the Bellator Season 7 LW tournament with wins over Magomed Saadulaev, Ricardo Tirloni and Marcin Held. He followed that up with a decision over Rick Hawn before being sidelined with a knee injury. He returns at Bellator 136 to challenge for the title currently held by Will Brooks.

Practice What You Preach - Rev Returns to MCC
On June 27, 2014, Chuck "The Reverend" Grigsby (23-9) will look to collect the 6th championship belt of his MMA career at MCC 54. He will take on Robert "The Destroyer" Morrow, a tough veteran of the Midwest fight circuit. The five round title fight will headline a 14 bout card at Hy Vee Hall in Des Moines, Iowa.
Robert Morrow is a power puncher with some solid victories on his resume, and certainly isn't a fighter to be underestimated. In speaking about what he knew about him, Rev said, "the guy across from you in the cage is the toughest guy in the world until you beat him. That guy is the best, strongest and most skilled guy. You have to respect your opponent. You have to respect the game. You don't get this far in MMA without respecting the game."
Chuck won't be watching any tape on Morrow, or any of his future opponents for that matter. "I used to watch tape earlier on in my career and it didn't help. Some guys would look fast on tape, and it didn't translate to the fight. Sometimes they'd look stronger on tape. You never know until you get in there with them."

In his last bout, Chuck steamrolled Dan McGlasson in just over twenty seconds. In describing the fight, he said, "I had respect for him, but he filled in at the last minute. I work way too hard preparing for my fights, mentally and physically. I don't think he was prepared. You can't get in there with me if you aren't prepared."

When describing the amount of fights that have fallen through, a major problem for fighters, Chuck didn't want to point fingers. "Nowadays people pull out, think about what the outcome might be. I might have been able to make more money that way. I haven't had the greatest management all the time. You have to make your own opportunities. Embrace every opportunity and prepare the best you can."
The biggest topic I wanted to ask Rev about was the bout at VFC 40 against Houston Alexander. "Alexander is this big scary guy everyone is afraid of. I wasn't. He lay and prayed the first round. The referee wasn't the greatest and let him lie there. I started to do better in the second, and in the third was really causing damage." It looked like Chuck had opened up a cut with an elbow, with blood coming out near Alexander's right eye. When asked about what happened in the fourth, Rev explained, "my mouth guard came out for the first time in my career. I made eye contact with the ref and I thought he was going to let me put it in. When I went to grab it, I got hit and knocked off balance. I take full responsibility for the loss."

When I asked about a potential rematch, Chuck said, "I'd be excited about taking that fight. That would be an great fight for the fans. A lot of people would like to see it. Really it is the one fight of my career where I'd like a re-do. I feel like I can win that fight and I'd be better prepared. Of course, he'd be better prepared for me. But, I don't think he will take the fight."

Chuck is proud of what he has accomplished in his career, from amassing regional titles, representing Team USA East to a silver medal in M-1, fighting around the world and being in the MCC Hall of Fame. Currently training out of Omega MMA and Westchase Impact Martial Arts under Alexey Petrov, Rev explained that he is training with some up and comers that not many people know about yet. However, MMA is not a team sport, "it is about self discipline, respecting your opponent, preparing yourself for every scenario. You can never do enough. I've seen so many up and coming fighters with potential have 3, 4, 5 fight careers. The thing about MMA is that it exposes you mentally."

Overseas fighting really opened up Chuck to several things and expanded his game. "Not many American fighters go overseas to fight, I've fought in Amsterdam, Bulgaria, Russia. Win or lose, it makes you a stronger person. I've been lucky to get those opportunities." Not everything goes according to plan overseas however. "You have a fourteen hour flight, you are in different time zones, new food, new environments, there are a lot of unknowns."

Rev actually was in Sochi, Russia, before last years Winter Olympics. "They took us around to lots of the construction sites. It is a resort area, kinda like the Florida of Russia." When asked about the stray dogs that were made popular in the news, Rev said, "Now that you mention it, there were lots of stray animals running around. Not just dogs."

I was wondering about the best wins of his career, and one fight that came up was his battle with Bellator veteran Atanas Djambazov (18-4) of Bulgaria. "Over in Bulgaria, I didn't know who was a friend or foe. That guy is a monster. I actually pulled my groin in the first round of the fight. They have a canvas on the floor of the ring over there, it is way different. It was bananas. I just kept battling and pulled off the decision. I left everything in the ring. Afterwards we were treated like kings. We all went to dinner after the fight and were treated very well. They respected us for having good sportsmanship, representing ourselves well and leaving everything out there."
I asked about the nickname "the Reverend" in our first interview, but wanted to learn more. Rev said, "You know, I originally wanted to be called The God Son for my first fight." But that nickname didn't get close to sticking. "Everyone was calling me The Reverend for that fight anyway. It actually started in high school, and I don't know who started saying it. My coach Tom Lee had all the basketball players wear a suit and tie to school on Friday game days. I'd never had a reason to have a suit or a tie before. I guess one of the kids saw how I looked and how I was carrying myself, and called me "The Reverend." It snowballed from there.
"It isn't religious at all. It is a positive thing and I do take pride in the name. I don't want to be an Axe Murderer or an Assassin. I'm proud of the nickname." Pressing a little more I was able to get Rev to talk more about what got him into MMA, he said, "maybe it was insecurity, trying to prove something to someone. I've been very fortunate to always have success. I wasn't sure who I was, and maybe [MMA] helped me. You learn something about yourself."
My first interview with Chuck was six years ago. He is the same genuine high character person today as he was then. The biggest difference seems to be his motivation for fighting. Early on, Chuck's motivation seemed to be more about accumulating belts and getting to a bigger stage. Now it is all about fighting for the Grigsby family, or as he calls it the "G-Unit." "I want to thank my family most of all. They've had to sacrifice for me to do this. I also want to thank my inner circle, my role models, coaches and friends. I don't want to list names because I'll accidentally forget someone, but you know who you are. I also want to thank Joe from MMA Blaster. He let's me talk and really does a great job translating."

Here is Chris Horodecki fighting Anthony Njokuani at WEC 45 which took place on 12/19/09 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Horodecki (18-4) who was touted as an MMA prodigy in the International Fight League, would go 2-2 in the WEC and 1-1-1 in Bellator, and currently does not have any fights scheduled.
Njokuani (15-7) made the move from the WEC to the UFC going 2-3 with wins over Andre Winner and John Makdessi. After losing to Rafeal dos Anjos in July of 2012, he has yet to fight again.

Top WEC Fighters Coming to the UFC
Here is a look at the best fighters in the WEC who will soon make the venture to the UFC. The most interesting thing will be to see how WEC 155 pounders do in the UFC.
Also, what undersized UFC 155 pounders decide to make a drop to 145? Keep in mind it is unclear which contracts will be renewed and what fighters will not make the transition to the UFC.
135 - Bantamweight
1. Dominick Cruz (17-1)- WEC Champ with well-rounded skills, has wins over Joe Benavidez, Brian Bowles and Charlie Valencia. Cruz defeated Scott Jorgenson in a unanimous decision to close out his WEC career.
2. Brian Bowles (8-1)- Former WEC Champ has wins over Damacio Page and Miguel Torres. Has struggled with injuries as of late.
3. Scott Jorgenson (11-4)- 3X Pac Ten wrestling champ. Wins against Brad Pickett and Antonio Banuelos. Next in line for a title shot.
4. Joe Benavidez (13-2)- The high energy spark plug fighter has wins over Jeff Curran, Miguel Torres and Rani Yahya. Benavidez won via guillotine choke over Wagney Fabiano at WEC 52, and wants to fight in UFC's coming 125 flyweight division.
5. Urijah Faber (25-4)- Faber, the former WEC champ, has stopped Dominick Cruz, Bibiano Fernandes and Raphael Assuncao. Urijah defeated Takeya Mizugaki at WEC 52, and is rumored to possibly coach TUF 13 or be fast-tracked to a title shot. He is rumored to fight Eddie Wineland in the UFC.

1. Jose Aldo (18-1)- Aldo has looked unstoppable in his run to the WEC title, currently riding an 11 fight win streak. The Muay Thai striker has defeated Urijah Faber, Manny Gamburyan, Mike Thomas Brown, Alexandre Franca Nogueira. He fights Grispi at UFC 125.
2. Manny Gamburyan (11-5)- Manny turned a runner-up performance on a talent rich TUF 5 into a brief stint in the UFC, followed by a 3-1 effort so far in the WEC with his lone loss coming to Jose Aldo. Manny's WEC wins have come over John Franchi, Leonard Garcia and Mike Brown.
3. Chad Mendes (9-0)- Mendes has looked solid in his 3 straight 2010 victories in the WEC. Mendes has bested Cub Swanson, Anthony Morrison and Erik Koch. Mendes defeated Javier Vazquez at WEC 52, securing his spot in the UFC. He fights Mike Brown at UFC 125 for a likely title shot.
4. Diego Nunes (16-1)- Nunes is coming off a split decision over Mike Brown in his UFC debut. His other big wins have come over Rafeal Assuncao, Cole Province and Rafeal Dias.

2. Benson Henderson (12-2)- The former college wrestler has developed a nice submission skill-set, submitting Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner in his last two outings. Smooth also has wins over Shane Roller and Anthony Njokuani.
3. Donald Cerrone (13-3)- One of the more interesting characters of the WEC, the Cowboy has solid Muay Thai and legit submission skills. Big wins have come over Razor Rob McCullough, Ed Ratcliff and Jamie Varner.
4. Kamal Shalorus (7-0-2)- Split decision win over Bart Palaszewski at WEC 53. Iran wrestling stand-out has 4 TKO's, with wins over Will Kerr and Dave Jansen.
5. Bart Palaszewski (35-13)- Former IFL stand-out has excelled in the WEC with 3 straight WEC victories, his last two include a KO over previously unbeaten Zack Micklewright and armbar over Karen Darabedyan.

Mendes went 4-0 in the WEC to punch his ticket to the UFC. He will fight highly ranked Michihiro Omigawa at UFC 126.

WEC 53 Finale
The WEC ended its 9 year run with a bang this Thursday night with an instant classic between Benson Henderson and Anthony Pettis. In a bout featuring upper level striking, wrestling and submission attempts. The capper was a fifth round Pettis ninja wall kick while using the cage. With the win, WEC champ Pettis will fight the winner of Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar for the UFC title.

WEC 52 Preview
In its second to last show, the WEC will feature Urijah Faber fighting Takeya Mizugaki. The event will air live on WEC on Thursday night from The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. The broadcast should start around 9 PM Eastern on Versus.
There will be more than a few guys fighting for a spot in the organization as it moves to the UFC. Depending on the contract, I expect most of the losers from the premilinary card to be shown the door.
This will be the first time to 135 pound for Faber, who has been a consistently solid draw for the promtion. Expect Faber to look for takedowns and ground and pound early and often, as he should have an advantage grappling.
Urijah Faber was truly one of the fighters who put the WEC on the map since he won the featherweight title in March of 2006 against Cole Escovedo. During a 13 fight win streak from October of 2005 to June of 2008, Faber defended the WEC belt 5 times, including over current bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz. Faber has since alternated wins and losses prompting the shift to 135.

Takeya Mizugaki will be looking to trade strikes early and often, with his quick and accurate kickboxing. The former Cage Force bantamweight tourney champ and Shooto rookie of the year has WEC wins over BJJ black belts Jeff Curran and Rani Yahya.

What to do with the WEC?
The Zuffa controlled WEC promotion will officially merge with the UFC in the beginning of 2011, most likely at UFC 125. What will happen with the WEC promotion is still up in the air.
The WEC promotion was started in 2001 by Reed Harris and Scott Adams. In its infancy, the promotion had all weightclasses with many notable champions. Frank Shamrock held the light heavyweight belt in 2003 before leaving for Strikeforce, later Scott Smith would vacate the same belt to compete in TUF 4.
The welterweight division has seen Nick Diaz, Shonie Carter, Karo Parisyan, Mike Pyle and Carlos Condit hold the belt. The middleweight belt was held by Chris Leben, Joe Riggs and Paulo Filho. In 2006 Zuffa purschased the WEC, and in 2008 all weights above 155 were merged into the UFC.
I have always been of the contention that the WEC should be an official feeder league or minor league for the UFC with all weight classes. That way, young prospects can get a few fights infront of a TV audience and a larger live crowd. Many prospects go from fighting infront of 1,000 people straight to the UFC and 15,000 plus. It isn't surprising that they get the jitters.
In addition, instead of cutting popular fighters to be picked up by other promotions, they could send them to the WEC to pick up a few wins. That would have been ideal for fighters like Gabriel Gonzaga, Keith Jardine or Pat Cote. Also, TUF competitors not quite ready for the UFC could prove themselves in the WEC.
The most plausible scenario is that the WEC will be shut down for good. The promotion will only exist in WEC wreckage replays on Versus and DVD sales. It is a shame, as the promotion always seemed to make money with reasonable fighter payouts, a solid television deal and good crowds.

WEC 48 Preview
WEC 48 will be the promotions first ppv event, with the ppv being handled by Zuffa's team. Familiar voices Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg will be commentating, and the WEC fighters paychecks will be adjusted accordingly.
In the main event, hard hitting 145 pound champion Jose Aldo (16-1) will be fighting former champ Urijah Faber. Aldo won the featherweight strap by TKO'ing Mike Thomas Brown in the third round. Aldo has the universal number 1 featherweight in the world, mixing his hard hitting striking with a BJJ blackbelt.

Urijah Faber (23-3) held the WEC belt for 2 years before losing to the aforementioned Mike Thomas Brown. Faber mixes a high energy style with good boxing and excellent wrestling. Faber owns WEC wins over Rafeal Assuncao, Jens Pulver, Jeff Curran, Dominick Cruz and Bibiano Fernandes.

The two were involved in one of the best fights in 2009 with excellent stand-up and ground work. WEC 41 Preview
This Sunday will feature and awesome WEC card with Urijah Faber facing Mike Thomas Brown in a rematch. In the previous fight, Urijah Faber attempting a spinning back elbow, only to be punched in the jaw by Brown. With Urijah stunned, it was all Brown from that point.
