Denis Goltsov versus Paul Buentello

Here is Denis "The Russian Bogatyr" Goltsov fighting UFC veteran Paul Buentello at ACB 41 - Path to Triumph which took place on 6/15/16 in Sochi, Russia.

Goltsov is a 6'5" legit kickboxing prospect whose 13 fight win streak includes stoppages over Mike Kyle, James McSweeney, Brett Rogers and Roy Boughton. With heavyweight prospects in short supply, Goltsov is a interesting guy to keep an eye on.

UFC: Versus 1

UFC's first debut on the Versus network produced an entertaining fireworks. On the undercard, John "Doomsday" Howard destroyed UFC newcomer Daniel Roberts with vicious ground and pound. Junior Dos Santos pushed even closer to a title shot and X put his name right and center in the UFC's 205 pound division.

In the first fight of the broadcast, Alessio Sakara landed a perfect right hand into James Irvin's eye socket causing a stoppage in the first round. James Irvin originally thought it was an eyepoke, but veteran UFC referee Josh Roshental made the correct call.

In undercard action, John Howard fought the undefeated Daniel Roberts. Roberts was able to get takedowns early, but eventually Howard unloaded a fury. Howards hit a high amplitude double leg takedown then slammed a heavy right hand KO'ing Roberts.

In the second match of the evening, Cheick Kongo dominated Paul "Headhunter" Buentello for three rounds before coaxing a tapout from the veteran kickboxer. Kongo was able to mix in a combination of takedowns, punches, elbows and knees.

Referee Herb Dean did an exceptional job refereeing the fight. He deducted a point from Cheick Kongo from a knee when Paul Buentello. In doing so, Dean gave Buentello ample time to recover. Buentello also dislocated a pinky finger and was allowed to continue after popping it back into place.

In the end, Kongo's relentless attack was to much for Buentello to handle. Elbows to the thigh eventally forced Buentello to submit. With the victory, expect Kongo to get a solid test in the form of the winner of Roy Nelson and Stephen Struve.

Junior Dos Santos took another step into the heavyweight title picture defeating veteran UFC heavyweight contender Gabriel Gonzaga. Dos Santos defended the takedown, loading up a mean right hand. Gonzaga landed a couple deadly leg kicks, but eventually let his guard down.

As Gonzaga threw a leg kick, Dos Santos fired a shot from hell, flooring Gonzaga, the BJJ blackbelt to the ground. A few more punches sealed the deal, and Gonzga was cooked. Dos Santos now will likely fight Cain Velasquez for a title shot.

In the main event, Jon "Bones" Jones inched his way closer to a 205 pound title shot. Jones looked to be the quicker fighter as he was able to land strikes and take down Brandon Vera. From there, Jones worked top control and threw some punches. Until Vera threw an upkick while Jones had a knee on the canvas.

Vera was deducted a point for the foul and Jones was given back position. From there, Bones Jones landed nasty left and right punches and elbows from Vera's guard with his big-time reach advantage. A point of a right elbow looked to land on Vera's eye socket, prompting the stoppage. Look for Jones to fight Ryan Bader or the winner of Forrest Griffin v. Antonio Nogueira.

UFC Versus 1

UFC will have its first show on Versus on March 21, 2010 at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado. So far, the card has 11 rumored fights, but only 3 confirmed for the main TV broadcast.

The main event pits the uber athlete Jon "Bones" Jones against Muay Thai specialist Brandon Vera. This fight should see Brandon Vera to attempt to keep the fight standing while throwing more precise kicks and punches from distance. Jones may look to slug with Vera before going for a takedown.

Jon Jones (9-1, 3-1 UFC) is looking to come back from a devastating DQ loss to Matt Hamill. Jones was dominating the fight before throwing illegal elbows to a downed and near finished Matt Hamill. Jones has looked excellent in his UFC fights with wins over Stephen Bonnar, Andre Gusmao and Jake O'Brien.

(Jon Jones pictured)

Brandon Vera (11-4, 7-4 UFC) will be trying to rebound from a controversial decision loss to Randy Couture. Vera started his career in the heavyweight division before a loss to Tim Sylvia sent him to 205. Vera's biggest win was a TKO over Frank Mir. He has other wins over Krzysztof Soszynski, Reese Andy and Justin Eilers.

(Brandon Vera pictured)

Junior Dos Santos v. Gabriel Gonzaga- This fight has a good chance to be over in a hurry. Dos Santos (10-1, 4-0 UFC) has been throwing heavy hands during his tenure in the UFC, KO'ing Fabricio Werdum, Gilbert Yvel, Stefan Struve and making Cro Cop submit to punches. Dos Santos will look to throw his signature big power punches to add another KO to his resume and get closer to a title shot.

Gabriel Gonzaga (11-4, 7-3 UFC) has had an up and down UFC career. Gonzaga started out destroying Kevin Jordan, Fabiano Scherner, Carmelo Marrero and then scoring a massive head kick KO over Mirko Cro Cop. After a loss to Randy Couture, Gonzaga has wins over Justin McCulley, Josh Hendricks and a controversial win over Chris Tuchscherer after a low blow. Gonzaga may look to get the fight to the ground where the BJJ blackbelt has an edge.

Paul Buentello v. Cheick Kongo-
All signs point to this fight being a stand-up war. Buentello and Kongo are both top level kickboxers who will be looking for a KO. Kongo (14-6, 7-4 UFC) has been up and down, typically having problems with top level submission artists.

Paul Buentello (27-11, 3-2 UFC) has scored 17 KO's in his MMA career and is notorious for avoiding the ground and looking for big shots. Buentello has recently been training in Colorado with Trevor Whitman and the Greg Jackson crew.

James Irvin v. Alessio Sakara- Striker James Irvin (14-5, 3-4 UFC) is rebounding from a knee injury and other setbacks that have forced him out of competition since his loss to Anderson Silva in July 2008. Alessio Sakara (14-7, 5-4 UFC) meanwhile is riding a two fight win streak defeating Thales Leites and Joe Vedepo.

Eliot Marshall v. Vladimir Matyushenko
John Howard v. Daniel Roberts

Affliction - King Fedor Rules Supreme

With one devastating punch to the face, Fedor Emelianenko knocked Andrei Arlovski into another stratosphere. He also knocked out anyone who thinks Fedor does not deserve the status as the worlds top heavyweight fighter.

Arlovski was on a hot streak coming into the bout, defeating Roy Nelson, Ben Rothwell, Jake O'Brien, Fabricio Werdum and Marcio Cruz. But Arlovski's fate would be different against the legend of Fedor.

Through first three minutes, Arlovski and Fedor traded punches. Arlovski used his height and reach advantage to create distance. Fedor fed Arlovski a steady diet of overhand rights but Arlovski seemed to be a hair faster with his straight punches. Even Tito's praise of Arlovski could help him against the unstoppable Fedor.

In a flury, Fedor was knocked to the corner with an Arlovski push kick that would seem to have stunned a normal fighter. But the ever calm Fedor slowed down the game as Arlovski turned on his jets. Andrei sprang forward with a flying knee, but waiting for him was a Fedor right hand that landed right on the button. Another one bites the dust.

As the power punch met its target on Arlovski's jaw, the 6'4" heavyweight came crashing to the canvas. Fedor calmly walked away, his hand raised. Three minutes and fourteen seconds had passed and another former UFC heavyweight champ fell victim to the top HW in the world. Fedor needed just 3:14 to take out another challenger.

The next challenge for Fedor will likely be top 4 HW Josh Barnett. Barnett defeated Gilbert Yvel at 3:05 of the third round due strikes. Josh has kept a fairly busy schedule despite Affliction's light schedule fighting twice in Japan for the Sengoku in 2008.

In other action, Vitor Belfort unleashed a fury on Matt Lindland knocking him senseless at with a left hand punch to Lindland's chin. Belfort followed up with a couple punches, but they weren't needed. Vitor notched his 4 win in a row, utilizing his hand to knock out a world class wrestler.

In the second round, Babalu Sobral was able to choke out Sokoudjou with an anaconda choke. Sobral tried and tried to bring the fight to the ground, and once his finished a double leg, Sokoudjou was cooked.

Paul Buentello def Kiril Sidelnikov via TKO (doctor's stoppage), R3- 4:18- Buentello simply outclassed baby Fedor in this heavyweight tilt. Buentello measured his opponent and found his jab enroute to opening up a cut on the Russian. From there, the fight was stopped in the third round.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira def Vladimir Matyushenko via KO (Knee), R2- 4:26- For some reason, Vladdy Matyushenko didn't attempt a takedown in this fight and he sure paid for it. Vladdy lost in brutal fashion being rocked by knees and punches before finally crumpling to the mat.

Brett Cooper def Patrick Speight via TKO (Punches), R2- 4:10- Brett Cooper and his Clay Guida style caveman locks used superior boxing and cardio to put out Patrick Speight.

Albert Rios def Antonio Duarte via Decision (Unanimous)
L.C. Davis def Bao Quach via Decision (Unanimous)
Dan Lauzon def Bobby Green via Sub (Rear-Naked Choke), R1- 4:55
Jay Hieron def. Jason High via KO (punches) -- Round 1, 1:04.

Affliction: Day of Reckoning Preview

Here is the rumored card for Affliction: Day of Reckoning which takes place this Saturday. The under card will be shown live on HDNet. The fights will take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

MAIN CARD

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski- Fedor's lone mma appearance in 2008 was a 36 second destruction of former UFC champ Tim Sylvia. Fedor will most likely try to bring the fight to the ground in an attempt to submit Arlovski. Then again, Fedor may try to use his boxing to take out Arlovski.

A highly decorated fighter that some call the greatest of all-time, Fedor has beat the best fighters at their primes. We will see how much longer Fedor's reign can continue. Fedor holds wins over Tim Sylvia, Antonio Nogueria, Mirko Cro Cop Filipovic, Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Semmy Schilt, Ricardo Arona, Heath Herring, Gary Goodridge, Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, Mark Coleman, Mark Hunt, Matt Lindland, Naoya Ogawa, Kevin Randleman and Kazuyuki Fujita.

If Arlovski has one thing going for him, its a lack of ring rust. Arlovski fought three times in 2008 earning TKO/KO wins over Jake O'Brien, Ben Rothwell and Roy Nelson. The former UFC heavyweight champ will likely try to utilize his boxing skills that he has been honing recently with legendery boxing coach Freddie Roach. Arlovski has beat Vladimir Matyushenko, Justin Eilers, Tim Sylvia (w/two losses), Paul Buentello and Ian Freeman in the UFC.

(Andrei Arlovski pictured)

Josh Barnett vs. Gilbert Yvel- Barnett is an absolute monster in the submission game. In his three appearances in 2008 Barnett won over Jeff Monson via unanimous decision, Hidehiko Yoshida via heel hook and in his most impressive performance KO'd legendary striker Pedro Rizzo.

Josh Barnett has victories over Mirko Cro Cop, Aleksander Emelianenko, Semmy Schilt, Dan Severn, Mark Hunt and Yuki Kondo in his career. With 14 of his 23 victories won via submission, common logic would seem to lend Barnett going for a submission. Barnett should have a weight advantage in this fight.

(Josh Barnett pictured)

Gilbert Yvel (35-12) is a controversial figure in the mma world. He infamously has eye gouged Don Frye and KO'd a referee. What's lost is that he has a solid resume with 30 wins via KO/TKO and 5 sumission victories. His big wins have come against Semmy Schilt, Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, Cheick Kongo, Valentijn Overeem and Fabiano Scherner. Gilbert will look to get a KO on a takedown attempt.

Vitor Belfort vs. Matt Lindland- These two ten year UFC vets will fight in an interesting 185 pound contest. Vitor Belfort (17-8) last defeated UFC vet Terry Martin at the first Affliction with flashes of his devastating striking style. Vitor is currently on a three fight win streak and has victories over Randy Couture, Heath Herring, Wanderlei Silva and Gilbert Yvel.

(Vitor Belfort pictured)

Matt Lindland, the former Olympic silver medalist in Greco Roman wrestling will carry a chip on his shoulder after a decision victory of Fabio Nascimento at the first Affliction. Previous to that fight, Lindland lost to Fedor in Bodog Fight. Lindland has victories over Jeremy Horn, Carlos Newton, Joe Doerkson, Travis Lutter and Pat Miletich.

Renato "Babalu" Sobral vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou
Paul Buentello vs. Kiril Sidelnikov

UNDER CARD (HDNet)

Vladamir Matyushenko vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Jay Hieron vs. Jason High
L.C. Davis vs. Bao Quach
Antonio Duarte vs. Albert Rios
Patrick Speight vs. Brett Cooper

Paul Buentello v. Alistair Overeem

Profile by the Blaster

Paul "The Headhunter" Buentello (23-9) possesses brutal knockout power and has plenty of KO's on his resume, as does fellow kickboxer Alistair Overeem (25-11). Both have got definate power on their feet. On November 16th the Strikeforce heavyweight title will be up for grabs. All of Paul's 23 wins have come via KO or submission, an he has won four straight. As Alistair is also a kickboxer, don't worry about the fight hitting the ground, check out what Paul said on mmafighting.com,

MMAFighting.com: Do you see any scenario at all where this fight could end up on the ground at some point?

Paul Buentello: I don’t know. I’ve never taken anybody down in over thirty matches so I’m not looking for a takedown.

Don't know about you, but this is a fight that I am excited to see. Paul Buentello has wins over Tank Abbott, a vicious KO of Justin Eilers (18-6), Bobby Hoffman (36-10), Rueben Villareal, Carter Williams (3-2), Mike Kyle (9-5), Kevin "the Shaman" Jordan (9-5), Andy Montana (18-10), and the late Gilbert Aldana (6-2). (3-1) UFC record.

Alistair Overeem is a powerful kickboxer who stands tall at 6'5". He has fought at 205 and heavyweight, probably giving up around 25 pounds to Buentello. He has some notable victories over Bazigit Atajev (16-1), Michael Knaap (14-12), 2 times against Vitor Belfort (16-8), an aging Igor Vovchanchyn (16-9), Roman Zentzov (16-11) and split with Sergei Kharitonov (15-3). The knock on Overeem as that he tires out after the first few minutes. I am pretty sure he will be bringing his A game despite going 4-6 in his last ten fights (all losses to top notch opponents).

Strikeforce Tournament Series Picks

Strikeforce Tournament Series Review by the MMA Blaster

You have to give it to Strikeforce for deciding to hold a legit tournament on Friday night, 11-16-07. The United States hasn't had a big tournament in some time due to the UFC's stance that they won't hold tournaments anymore. (Don't tell them that TUF is a tournament). I like the idea of the lottery that Strikeforce is implementing.

They basically will have four balls numbered one to four that will be drawn by the fighters. The fighters will then seed themselves in the bracket. You definately want the first fight so you have extra time to recover, but you probably want to fight someone that you are comfortable with first. Those taking part in the tourney are Yuki Sasaki, Trevor Prangley, Jorge Santiago and Falaniko Vitale. The alternate bout is between Sean Salmon and Dennis Hallman.

This card is also stacked with Cung Le (see previous story) v. TUF alum Sammy Morgan, Paul “The Headhunter” Buentello (23-9) and Alistair “The Demolition Man” Overeem (25-11). World Light Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion Brian “The Mad Stork” Schwartz will make his MMA debut against Lemont Davis (8-4 according to Strikeforce, 0-0 according to Sherdog) in a 175 lb. catch weight.

Picks

Tournament Victor-- Trevor Prangley. He is riding a five fight win streak which includes wins over vet Yuki Kondo, Andrei Semenov (26-9), and Anthony Ruiz (17-10). I think he will use his wrestling skills to grind out the victory.

Buentello v. Overeem- Buentello. The Head Hunter is bigger than Overeem (who has fought mainly at 205) and I see him using it to his advantage to get the win. This fight will be a stand-up war and could very well be the fight of the night.

Le v. Morgan--I have the Cung Le legend continuing with a brutal KO by high kick in the second. Hey, we can all dream, can't we?

Alt. Bout- Salmon v. Hallman- I really want Salmon to get the victory here. It would give him the momentum running into his fight with Mayhem Miller. I think the younger Salmon will relax and avoid the submissions that will be coming at him.
